Mold Removal Experts Need Training & Experience
When your family residence in New Providence shows signs of microbial contamination or infestation, you want to know that a capable team of mold removal and remediation specialists can help. SERVPRO has dedicated professionals who receive extensive training in this and other areas.
Our technicians receive ongoing training in the techniques of mold removal. Our New Providence customers needing mold removal services benefit from having up-to-date removal and remediation technicians who understand the latest developments. Much of our training is based on IICRC guidelines. The course instructors who provide our training are also certified by the IICRC.
Here are a few of the reasons we engage in continuous training:
- New developments in building materials,
- Scientific discoveries regarding microbes, and
- New types of equipment are purchased.
When new materials to be used in building homes come on the market, SERVPRO wants to know how these can impact our customers who are already dealing with water disasters. Microbes can grow on non-cellulose materials if the dust settles on them long enough. Other new materials might also provide locations for microbial colonization. We want to know how to treat this new material without damaging it.
New microbes are continually being discovered. Some might require different handling methods that allow us to continue performing excellent mold removal work. New discoveries can help us provide better services to our customers.
Other times, the new development is closer to home. We often purchase new equipment to help us work more efficiently and provide our valued customers with the best possible services. Knowing how to use each new piece of equipment before arriving at a customer's location means less time spent learning and more time handling a disaster with skill and expertise.

Water Damage Repair in New Providence Homes after a Storm
Our techs are ready 24/7, 365 days a year.
For Efficient New Providence Storm Cleanup, Contact SERVPRO
A storm is usually characterized by torrential rains and high wind speeds that exert colossal pressure on the exterior surfaces of a structure. The windows, doors, and roofs are the most sensitive components of a home, as the winds can snap tree branches throwing them all over. Significant water volumes could enter your New Providence home when windows and roofs are compromised and cause appalling damage.
Speedy water damage repair at a New Providence property is essential, as excess moisture can affect every structural component, including the framing and foundation. When your floor is exposed to large amounts of water, the floor covering may deteriorate. Signs of high moisture levels in your flooring include buckling, cupping, and warping. SERVPRO responds quickly to storm emergencies extracting excess water, using a pump or squeegee, from your floors to prevent material deterioration.
Readily identifiable damage includes:
- Fallen and sagging ceiling panels
- Deteriorated drywall and insulation in walls
- Soaked carpet and furniture
- Damage to electrical fixtures
Storm Damage Repair
The restoration professionals at SERVPRO determine the best approach based on the state of your home - the affected contents and structural components. Since storm-damaged structures pose many hazards, like broken glass pieces, exposed nails, wood splinters, and other sharp objects, our teams are well-equipped with PPE to avoid injuries.
Steps during repair:
- Boarding up and installing tarps to halt water intrusion
- Remove absorbent materials such as carpet padding, furniture, and drapes
- Use air movers and dehumidifiers in affected areas to restore humidity
- Remove hidden moisture behind wallboards to avoid mold
Board-ups are crucial to help stop further moisture intrusion. Before installing tarps, SERVPRO crews determine the structural integrity of the roof. The ceiling may also pose dangers as it might be holding water. We drill weep holes starting from the edge of the sagging area to drain the cavity.

Why are Infrared Cameras Beneficial During New Providence Water Mitigation?
SERVPRO provides fast and quality water damage restoration services in your area. Call now for the help you need.
SERVPRO Utilizes State-of-the-Art Water Damage Equipment in New Providence Properties
Water damage in a New Providence property can come in many different forms, presenting challenges in the cleanup methods needed. The advanced equipment SERVPRO uses assists in making the restoration service have the best outcome possible.
During water mitigation in New Providence properties, locating the migration path of the water is crucial, no matter what the cause of the incident is. Among the equipment SERVPRO uses, the infrared camera also referred to as "thermography," is one of the most frequently relied on devices because:
- It causes no damage to the structure
- Reduces the challenge of inspecting difficult-to-reach areas
- Allows the techs to cover more area in less time
A penetrating moisture meter makes small holes with a needle to obtain accurate readings during the inspection phase of the restoration service. The use of infrared cameras need only be pointed at the area where water is suspected. The display shows color differentiations designating cooler and warmer areas behind walls. A frequently seen use of this equipment to find moisture within a home is seen in homes with extremely high ceilings. Without a ladder or scaffolding, it is difficult to use moisture meters in these areas of the structure; however, the infrared camera can detect the temp differences while the technicians stand below on the floor. The area coverage of the thermal camera makes inspecting the property go far more efficiently, so the areas that need attention from SERVPRO get focused on more quickly. In some cases, previously unknown issues can get found and repaired during the water damage mitigation service.
SERVPRO of Western Union County at (908) 791-9177 is available 24/7 for all types and sizes of water mitigation in New Providence properties. The trained techs make the damage to the home "Like it never even happened."

Boutiques and Bridal Shops Benefit from SERVPRO's Services
Water damage affecting stores can happen anytime from accidental or negligent leaks. When that happens, you should focus on how to save items and restore the store to its preloss state. A bridal shop can develop a wide range of issues, including secondary damage affecting high-value items such as gowns. A response plan that relies on variety will likely produce a better outcome.
Commercial water damage in your New Providence bridal shop will likely affect many areas. While most of the damage may be from the water pooling on floors and other surfaces, the incident can affect your store differently. Contents made of fabrics such as gowns have hygroscopic properties meaning they can easily absorb moisture from the air, which can ruin them. Our SERVPRO technicians anticipate such problems and can help move the contents from your facility. We can section of the property unaffected by the spill. We can also take further steps, such as sealing doorways with plastic sheets to limit air movement between affected and unaffected areas, thus limiting the effects of high humidity levels on your contents.
The restoration process differs at different stages. Immediately after discovering the spill, removing water from visible surfaces is the main priority. Having efficient extraction equipment is crucial to ensure that no standing water remains in the structure after 24 hours. After dealing with standing water, there is a need to address water in concealed areas such as subfloors or wall cavities. Our SERVPRO technicians have access to a wide variety of equipment, including high-pressure pumps, truck-mounted water extractors, and submersible pumps. We also have specialized cavity-drying systems, which help us remove moisture from concealed areas with minimal demolition.
Drying moisture remnants from the shop is necessary to comfort and prevent microbial growth. Various types of dehumidifiers can help dry the property to the desired level. Our SERVPRO technicians use different dehumidifiers, including conventional refrigerant, low grain refrigerant, and desiccant dehumidifiers. Conventional ones are efficient when drying up to 55gpp humidity level. If we need further drying, we can use LGR dehumidifiers which can achieve levels as low as 40gpp.
Water loss situations can be full of surprises, so preparation is necessary. Call SERVPRO of Western Union County at (908) 460-5426 to help provide various solutions. "Like it never even happened."
Become Familiar with New Providence Fire Damage Disaster Recovery
New Providence homeowners love how SERVPRO restores their fire damaged properties. "Like it never even happened."
Before We Begin Cleaning Smoke Damage in New Providence Homes
As much as homeowners want to have their properties back to preloss conditions as quickly as possible, rushing to restore New Providence residences after a fire can do more harm than good. With every scenario offering unique challenges for even our professional SERVPRO fire restoration specialists, we must carefully determine the full scope of the damage, the spread of these conditions, and the most efficient and practical approaches to fully restoring the property.
Smoke damage and effects can be among the worst lingering examples of fire damage in New Providence homes after an emergency. Because of its ability to affect the property in more than one way, our Fire & Smoke Restoration Technicians (FSRT) must stay trained in the latest and most effective practices for addressing residues, debris, and odors that smoke effects can leave behind. Before we can begin cleaning damaged areas, however, there are preliminary steps to help ultimately make these restorative actions more successful.
One of the first steps we must take is identifying the full extent of these damaging residues. Between smoke and soot, coatings could spread out far from the initial source of the fire. Careful inspections can determine how fire and smoke moved through the structure and residues directly impacted each surface. We would also use this opportunity to determine the type of residue, as there are different practices for restoring smoke, soot, and other coatings we might encounter after a fire.
Before cleaning the residue away, we must consider the type of surface and the best approach to capture and remove soot and smoke particles from this material. Because of a bonding that occurs, which can also lead to staining with improper cleaning techniques, taking an extra bit of time to identify the best cleaning approach for the material type protects both the material itself and prevents particulates from getting stirred up into the air.
Fire loss incidents can affect your home in many ways, but our SERVPRO of Western Union County team can help. (908) 460-5426.
A Very Wet New Providence Warehouse
Enjoy a show with a box of popcorn and leave the restoration of your New Providence warehouse to SERVPRO. "Like it never even happened."
Selecting the Correct Drying System to Remediate Flood Damage in Your New Providence Business
After the flooding of your New Providence commercial site, drying out the structure is not as simple as merely using commercial-grade pumps and extractors to suction up the liquid water. Although aggressive and thorough water removal is the foundation of appropriate flood remediation, the final drying step is critical. Understanding how drying elements work together clarifies why we use specific techniques and equipment when restoring your business property.
Choosing Between Open and Closed Drying Systems
Best restoration practices dictate which drying system is preferred when we plan for your New Providence warehouse flood damage recovery. For efficient drying, we must balance temperature, air movement, and humidity (H.A.T.), measuring and continuously monitoring the decreasing amount of moisture trapped inside porous building materials. The two systems achieve this in different ways:
Open drying systems:
- Exchange moist indoor air with drier outdoor air, negating the need for dehumidifiers
- Use open windows plus fans or air movers to facilitate the exchange
Closed drying systems:
- Contain (seal) the affected area from both outside air and undamaged spaces inside the rest of the building
- Use air movers, heaters, and dehumidifiers to control the environment, encouraging evaporation and capture of the resulting water vapor
Outdoor Temperature Limits Use of Open Drying Systems
Although an open drying system in a large area like a warehouse is more straightforward, SERVPRO Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC)-trained technicians only recommend it under particular weather conditions. During the cooler and cold times of the year, when the outdoor temperatures dip below 60 to 70 degrees F, it becomes tough to balance the system regardless of how dry the outdoor air is. If the outdoor air is nearly equal to or more humid than the indoor air, problems with condensation or increasing the vapor load inside prevent effective drying. The result may be "inside rain."
Closed Drying System Options in Commercial Areas
Water absorbed into porous building materials and fixtures cannot be wiped off, squeezed out, or suctioned up, causing SERVPRO to consider adaptations to closed dying systems in vast commercial spaces. Partitioning flood-affected areas into smaller drying sections help accelerate the evaporation and dehumidification. We also have extensive inventories of air movers, heaters, and dehumidifiers and access to additional equipment and technicians from our nationwide network of affiliated franchises to ramp up our efforts. Trailer-in desiccant dehumidifiers are powerful equipment for enormous volume drying efforts.
SERVPRO of Western Union County is prepared to help dry out and resolve even extensive commercial flood damage. Contact us at (908) 460-5426 to get trained crews in place and working fast.
Repairing Fire Damage for Businesses in New Providence
All commercial and residential surfaces covered with soot from a fire could all use one company--SERVPRO--Here to Help in New Providence
SERVPRO Fire Restoration Professionals Can Help Your Business
A fire at your business can cause serious disruption to workflow and even impact revenues if the premises is forced into temporary closure. To minimize disruption, property managers need to enlist the help of professional restoration technicians. Restoration technicians can scope the structure and contents of your business to put together an efficient game plan to ensure your company returns to normal.
The scoping procedure for fire damage in your New Providence business is split into two categories: scoping of contents and structure. In broad terms, this process is a thorough inspection of the premises for signs of smoke residues and damage. During a fire, the most heavily soiled areas are those closest to the source of ignition. However, hot smoke can travel rapidly through a structure leaving behind moderate and minor residues as it gets further from the ignition source. Sometimes, residues can be barely perceptible while still causing unpleasant odors. Scoping helps find soiling in all parts of the property by comparing surfaces and noting different materials or textures. SERVPRO has expertise in:
- Fire damage restoration
- Smoke damage mitigation
- Structural repair
Scoping materials involves taking an unaffected area of the structure or contents and comparing it with affected areas. By performing a direct comparison, we can ascertain which smoke-affected surfaces. Pre-testing is the natural follow-up to these comparisons where technicians perform light cleaning on different materials and textures. The success of light cleaning can help us to determine which materials are salvageable and which require replacement. This process helps to increase restoration efficiency by allowing technicians to direct their focus purely on items or structures that can return to preloss conditions. Any non-salvageable materials can be replaced with like-for-like materials to return your business to its normal state.
- Materials differ in porosity which can be a defining factor in using a wet or dry-cleaning method to restore.
- Synthetic materials in the premises are generally easier to clean than their natural counterparts despite gathering more soot or damage in a fire.
- Semi-refinishing is an aggressive cleaning procedure that removes a finish before refinishing to allow an item to return to preloss condition.

You Remove Standing Water from Your New Providence Home?
There is a never-ending push for New Providence homeowners to be more independent and active in restoring and recovering their properties after a loss incident. Even with something as seemingly straightforward as water damage, recovering from the effects of this disaster might require more sophisticated tools and practices that are available to the average homeowner. Many instead choose to trust our SERVPRO team to help.
The task could be overwhelming if you want to know the likelihood of successful water removal in your New Providence home without the appropriate equipment and practices. One of the initial obstacles is understanding the full measure of moisture damage and water migration through construction materials and contents in your home. During the scoping phase by our project manager or crew leader, we can utilize surface moisture meters, hygrometers, thermal imagery, and other advanced devices to detect the presence and concentration of moisture damage.
Effective Extraction Equipment
Standing water can be an alarming discovery because this water can saturate every material and item that it becomes exposed to, which can make it almost impossible for a homeowner to track fully. Our SERVPRO team arrives with multiple extraction tools to remove this standing water, allowing our technicians to scope the migration of saturation into materials. Depending on the location and severity of these conditions, we can utilize:
- Electric submersible pumps
- Truck-mounted extractors
- Wet vacuums
- Trash pumps
However, water removal does not exclusively mean the standing water you can see. Removing moisture from flooring and wallboard are two concerns that often accompany pooling water conditions. We can remove most moisture and dampness concerns for flooring and other exposed materials using air movers, drying mats, and wands.
While there are many ways that you can help your home to get efficient restoration responses after a damaging water incident, cleaning and removal are areas best left to our SERVPRO of Western Union County professionals. We can arrive quickly to help when you call us at (908) 791-9177.
We Discuss Choosing the Right Extractor for Flooding in Berkeley Heights
Berkeley Properties benefit from a swift groundwater extraction by SERVPRO. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.
Floodwater Removal Is Crucial to Storm Damage Mitigation
One of the advantages of selecting professional restoration and remediation services after flooding in your Berkeley Heights home is an extensive inventory of industry-leading equipment. A point of pride for our growing professional restoration team is the equipment, tools, and technology made available to our skilled technicians. After a flood, the suitable extractor can be the difference between efficient recovery and wasted time and money.
There are many factors in choosing the appropriate extraction equipment to address Berkeley Height's flood damage. Between pumps and extractors, the more efficiently that standing water can get removed from the structure, the less time our professionals must later spend removing the remaining moisture with our high-velocity air movers and dehumidification units. Because there are so many potential extraction tools available to our SERVPRO technicians, we follow the criteria to determine which device best suits the needs of your household.
Position of the Flooded Area
There are many instances where the decision of the extractor used correlates exclusively to the position of the damaged area. In two-story houses, for example, lead hoses from stationary extractors might be more challenging to manage when portable, and lightweight machines are more flexible.
Severity (Depth) of the Damage
Another consideration that our SERVPRO team must make when assessing the need for extraction equipment is how severe the damage is. The standing water depth can help determine which of the equipment in our inventory is necessary, from truck-mount extractors to light wands better suited for depths under two inches for surfaces like carpets.
The demands of the extraction equipment cannot always get met by the damaged home that our professionals work to restore. Portable extractors are versatile tools, but they require stable electricity – which can be challenging after widespread community flooding. We have trailered and portable generators to provide temporary power or extraction tools that operate off fuel, such as our truck-mount pumps and self-priming trash pumps.
No matter what your home needs after a flood loss, you can trust our extensive inventory of recovery tools to meet the demand. Give our SERVPRO of Western Union County team a call whenever you need us at (908) 791-9177.
What To Expect Following Flood Damage to New Providence Homes
SERVPRO has the cleaning products and chemicals to protect your property after flooding.
Direct Action Is Needed to Manage Flood Damage
Flood damage effects can be traumatic and make living conditions uncomfortable until restoration can get underway. For this reason, many look to our SERVPRO team for its fast response and experience with timely mitigation. Knowing what could be necessary to mitigate and protect damaged structures and contents can help put customers at ease with the work.
Flood damage to New Providence homes and businesses can create a destructive path in which water infiltrates the property, and the structural elements become exposed. A thorough inspection can help to determine where controlled demolition might be required. Additionally, SERVPRO professionals can provide patches like tarping and board-up to prevent further flood penetration while cleanup and drying get started.
Controlled Demolition After Exposure
Restoring a home after flooding is not always necessary or requires elaborating on controlled demolition. When contamination is a concern, any exposed materials will need to be removed and discarded to prepare the space for reconstruction. Controlled demolition is also necessary to provide required access to structural cavities for drying and disinfection.
Direct Extraction Solutions
Water removal is one of our professionals' most vital mitigative efforts with flood-damaged properties. Standing water is a typical result of intruding surges of groundwater, so suitable extraction must overcome pooling and any debris circulating. Trash pumps, wet vacuums, and other deep extraction equipment in our inventory can help with these water removal needs.
Surface Cleaning Tactics
Whether it is the threat of contamination or lingering residues and soil deposits on the surface of exposed materials, we have several cleaning products and chemicals to protect your property after flooding. Some of the common agents used for disinfection and cleaning include:
- Quaternary Compounds
Direct and aggressive action to protect the structure and its contents are our team's priorities. Our SERVPRO of Western Union County team responds fast to these emergencies to get mitigation started. Call now at (908) 791-9177.

Our Crews Are Ready 24/7 To Assist You With Your Scotch Plains Flood Damage
This client was surprised with how quickly and efficiently we were able to clean up the debris and water and get her basement back after flood damage.
Receding Waters Do Not Mean the End to Flood Damage in Scotch Plains
Heavy rains can bring flash flooding to Scotch Plains. Although the vast quantities of water flowing over pavement during and after a storm briefly make travel difficult, the water usually recedes without significant or lasting damage when the weather changes. If flash flooding makes its way into your home, however, a permanent solution is not merely waiting for it to subside. Indoors, if standing water seems to disappear, it is more likely the moisture migrated within your home. Residual moisture must be found and removed.
Professional Moisture Detection
Scotch Plains flood damage requires professional attention. When absorbed into structural components or trapped in building cavities, floodwaters continually promote the deterioration of building materials and can support harmful mold growth. Our Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC) training prepare us to use moisture probes and thermal imaging technology to discover the migration patterns of flooding. We record the data as a baseline during structural drying, ensuring our flood water removal efforts are successful.
Floodwater Is a Hazard
Floodwaters seek the path of least resistance, flowing through cracks and joints to collect beneath flooring, behind walls, and in other recesses. Because even clean water is corrosive, any lingering moisture is a problem. SERVPRO technicians know floodwater can contain chemicals and other pollutants and pathogens from organic debris or human and animal waste.
Moisture Release Strategies
The increased challenges presented by contaminants found in floodwater prompt SERVPRO to facilitate a broad range of fast and effective moisture release strategies. The more quickly we remove the tainted water, the better the outcome. We might choose to cut out sections of drywall to reach into cavities. Holes drilled into baseboards or mortar joints ventilate and allow negative air pressure equipment to suction water out. Floor mats connected to extractors pull moisture from subfloors and joists.
Inhibiting Microbial Growth
Contaminants in floodwaters can include viruses, bacteria, and fungi. Before initiating structural drying, it is essential to treat the flood-affected areas with an EPA-registered antimicrobial agent. Structural drying requires air movement, and SERVPRO works to limit any spread of pathogens by completing the disinfectant step before positioning and operating moisture reduction equipment.
SERVPRO of Western Union County has well-qualified crews ready 24/7 to assist when flood damage attacks the integrity of your home. Contact us at (908) 791-9177 for a comprehensive assessment and design and implement a recovery plan.
New Providence Restoration Professionals Talk Water Damage Mitigation
No matter if the water loss event is big or small, SERVPRO of Western Union County can mitigate the damage and restore your home!
New Providence Water Damage Basics: The Mitigation Phase
When your New Providence home suffers a water loss, you cope not only with the harm done but also with a steep learning curve as experts discuss recovery. Two terms that might seem interchangeable are mitigation and remediation. Instead, they represent separate phases of the restoration process, both essential to making it “Like it never even happened.” Mitigation tasks have the following purposes and implementation.
Mitigation Limits Current Damage and Prevents Further Loss
Phase one of your New Providence water damage recovery agenda includes mitigation tasks. Our project manager uses a visual analysis of the affected area and data from temperature and moisture detection devices to define the current perimeter of the water incursion. We then use the skills learned at the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) training to arrest the spread and migration of water beyond that line.
Water Extraction Is Mitigation
SERVPRO’s service vehicles hold a comprehensive inventory of water extraction equipment. Mitigation starts with a specific extraction course, starting with submersible pumps if standing water is two or more inches deep. Wanded portable or truck-mounted extractors use powerful suction to clean surfaces and fixtures like carpeting of residual water. We scan using infrared cameras for temperature fluctuations that signal the presence of trapped moisture behind, under, or above structures.
Planned Demolition Can Aid Mitigation
Mitigation can include controlled demolition to access the hidden water. Sections of drywall removed as “flood cuts” or punched or drilled “weep holes” release water from places it flowed and seeped. Choosing to take these steps might seem to worsen the damage. Instead, they permit SERVPRO crews to prevent the progressive deterioration of porous building materials and avoid secondary issues such as mold damage. We collect and dispose of as much of the hidden moisture as possible.
Structural Drying Completes Mitigation
Once the bulk of the water exits your home via pumps and extractors, structural drying commences. Thorough extraction does not eliminate the need for structural drying, but it significantly shortens the time necessary to reach normal moisture levels. SERVPRO Applied Structural Drying (ASD) technicians use the data gathered during the assessment phase and moisture metering of similar types of structural components in unaffected areas of the house to determine drying goals. Air movers and heaters create ambient conditions that evaporate the water absorbed by building materials. Then our dehumidifiers capture and collect the water for permanent disposal.

Mold Remediation of Contents of New Providence Homes
SERVPRO techs use a methodic approach to maximize the efficiency of mold remediation in New Providence homes. Mold can cause significant damage to the contents, including structural components of your property. Hence, the restorers must implement effective strategies to limit this damage.
SERVPRO techs follow IICRC S520 guidelines during mold remediation of New Providence properties, ensuring a safe and efficient job. Effective restoration of contents involves meticulous planning and flawless execution by the restorers. Consequently, SERVPRO techs take extra care while performing the damage assessment of the contents. Some of the decisions that they take during this phase of the process include:
- Categorizing the content items by their restorability
- Determining cleaning requirements
- Providing options to the customer as to the relative cost of cleaning versus replacement
- Identifying contents that require remediation by specialty cleaning professionals
Content Cleaning Methods Used by SERVPRO Mold Specialists
SERVPRO techs select a cleaning method that is the best one for the given situation. Techs spend time understanding the material composition, condition, and location of the content before deciding on any cleaning method. In some cases, SERVPRO techs use a combination of mold remediation methods to increase efficiency.
The three fundamental content cleaning methods that techs use during mold removal include:
- Air-based methods: HEPA vacuuming and air washing are the two most popular air-based cleaning methods that SERVPRO techs use for semi-porous and non-porous surfaces.
- Liquid-based methods: Rely on the water combined with a physical or mechanical cleaning process to dislodge contamination. Ultrasonic cleaning, steam cleaning, and high-pressure washing fall under this category.
- Abrasive methods: Use a medium or material to dislodge contamination. Sanding, sand, and soda blasting are examples of abrasive cleaning.

Hire SERVPRO to Perform Fire Restoration in Your New Providence Home
The U.S. Fire Administration shows that fire causes losses worth billions of dollars every year. After the fire trucks have departed, who you get in contact with determines how fast and effectively you can repair your home.
SERVPRO has a team of well-trained technicians who conduct fire restoration in affected New Providence homes. We can save you the headache of restoring your house to its normal condition as fast as possible. Our process is dependent on the state of the damaged structures and contents. Experience Plus the Right Equipment Equals Success
SERVPRO technicians are familiar with every aspect of water removal and structural drying. Once the plan is in their hands, mitigation and remediation begin immediately. Gas-powered pumps and truck-mounted extractors eliminate the need for your electricity to be live at the onset, avoiding any delays. How to Handle Flood Removal in New Providence Homes
SERVPRO of Western Union County is here to assist you in managing your flood damage.
SERVPRO Uses Advanced Equipment to Help With Flood Cleanup in New Providence
During a storm, water may rise and spread into your New Providence home, and it soaks into several materials. While using extraction equipment like wet vacuums may help sort out surface water, the water absorbed by materials can be challenging to address. Professional assistance may be necessary to remove such water.
A thorough flood removal exercise in New Providence homes is necessary to address diverse soiling and moisture. When floodwaters recede, they leave numerous residues like silt and debris, significantly soiling materials and surfaces. Our SERVPRO technicians have the appropriate resources, which simplifies the cleanup of structural areas and contents. Other than using shovels and rakes to remove solid wastes, we use powerful removal equipment like:
- Pressure washers
- Rotating brushes
- Trash pumps
Successfully addressing hidden moisture and debris
There could be hidden areas in your home where mud or water is trapped. Our technicians diligently identify and clean soils or water located in such places. We pry off baseboards and check under appliances, cabinets, and built-ins to remove mud and mop out water. Directing fans into these spaces enhances drying. With carpeted rooms, the mess and damage can be overwhelming. Padding deteriorates when saturated with water and may not be restored.
Precautions when removing carpet and pad
- When disengaging, do not damage baseboards and walls
- Cut pad and carpet into 2x2 foot section for disposal
- Place pieces into plastic bags
Water may also penetrate from above during a storm, so checking the ceiling cavities for trapped water is important. When the ceiling is exposed to moisture, it softens and tends to sag. By drilling weep holes at the edge of sagging areas, SERVPRO technicians can release the trapped water and avoid a sudden release which might be the case if the holes are made at the center.

What Residues Get Cleaned Up After Fires in Scotch Plains Shops?
Commercial fire damage restoration is no easy task. SERVPRO has the manpower and equipment for every size disaster.
Fires produce many soil and residue deposits that fire damage restoration in Scotch Plains properties must address.
It is important to get fire mitigation services started as soon as our team arrives. We can work quickly to determine what threatens the structure the most and work through emergency services to protect the shop and its wares from irreparable harm. These approaches might include:
- Debris removal
- Water extraction
- Furniture and content removal
Soot and Smoke Residues
More than any other cleanup need for businesses, fire damage in Scotch Plains shops and commercial properties is most often centered on removing soot and smoke residues. This process changes based on the type of soil composition on affected surfaces. This is usually indicated by the source of the fire, how fast it spreads through the house, and the heat involved.
Fire Suppression Residues
We must also find a suitable approach for cleaning up fire suppression residues. Many commercial properties feature a building-wide fire suppression system using sprinkler heads and clean water, but fire extinguisher residues can also be challenging to remove. We must determine the surface cleaning needs and begin these processes as soon as possible to protect your shop's wares, electronics, and structural elements.
Addressing Solids Before They Land
We can reduce the need for residue cleanup on surfaces and contents by trapping and removing these particles before they reach their destination. After a fire gets extinguished, smoke solids can continually circulate throughout the environment for several days. Our use of air scrubbers and HEPA filtration equipment can be crucial in grabbing microscopic particles as small as 0.3 microns to improve indoor air quality substantially.
Cleaning up after fire damage incidents can involve multiple residues and soils across the entire shop area. Because soot and smoke residues present a challenging obstacle to restorers, we arrive with considerable cleanup and deodorization solutions to manage these concerns quickly. Give our SERVPRO of Western Union County team a call today at (908) 791-9177.
Do Antimicrobial Products Remove Mold from New Providence Homes?
Mold remediation for your home is no DIY pooject. Call SERVPRO for fast and immediate service you need.
We have multiple mold removal approaches for damaged properties in New Providence.
The location of mold damage is often a determining factor in the ideal remediation approach to remove and eliminate active colonies and organisms from a household. With the common threats of microbial growth, removing these organisms should begin as soon as our team arrives. Common areas to find mold growth include:
Cleaning Mold-Damaged Surfaces
Surface cleaning is an effective solution for mold removal in New Providence homes. The use of antimicrobial products and sporicidal solutions eliminates surface mold on contact and can be effective on multiple types of residential mold. This option is most effective when in the earliest stages of mold detection, where the organism has yet to sit deeply into hosting materials like drywall.
Preventing Mold Growth
Another practical reason to attempt service cleaning strategies before other more aggressive approaches is the ability of these products to reduce the possibilities of further mold colonization. Surface treatment can involve making hosting elements uninhabitable to active spreading colonies in damaged areas. This can be an effective treatment before surfaces get repainted or refinished to protect them against future growth concerns.
Sanding and Dry Ice Blasting
There are times when more aggressive mold remediation tactics will be necessary. As effective as surface treatment can be for specific types of damage, abrasive cleaning like sanding or dry ice blasting can be suitable for organism infestation that spreads beyond the initial surface layer. In the most extreme cases, controlled demolition can be an effective strategy to eliminate mold and prevent it from spreading.
Removing mold can involve many different practices depending on the severity of the situation and the affected materials. Our professionals were quickly determined where remediation is necessary and the most efficient solutions for protecting your property and its contents. Our efforts begin as soon as you call our SERVPRO of Western Union County team at (908) 791-9177.

Post-fire damage effects can be overwhelming to clean or remove from Scotch Plains properties.
After a fire, many loss effects threaten the structure. We have experienced professionals to address the pressing needs of the property and lingering effects like harsh malodors.
Fire Debris Removal and Surface Cleaning
Fire damage in Scotch Plains homes can point to many compromising effects. When looking to reduce and eliminate strong odors, multiple practices are encouraged to lessen the strength for more efficient deodorization later on. This process begins with fire debris removal and continues with soot cleanup.
Smoke and Soot Cleanup
The removal of smoke residues can also reduce the severity of smoke odors. These soils on surfaces retain burning smells from the materials affected, so when these residues get removed, the formidable offensive odors they generate are discarded as well. Cleaning up soot and smoke damage on surfaces includes approaches like:
- Wet cleaning products
- Dry chemical sponges
- Dry vacuums
- Media blasting
Air Filtration and Improvement
HEPA filtration and air scrubbing equipment are used to trap and contain circulating particles and microscopic smoke solids that increase the concentration and strength of post-fire malodors. These filtering products improve the indoor air quality as restoration continues.
Full Deodorization Equipment
Among the final stages in removing these harsh odors from the house is introducing our powerful deodorization tools to the equation. Elements like our ozone machine produce unstable compounds that bond with odor molecules and neutralize them on contact when occupants of the house have been displaced for the restoration process. This is among the most effective odor neutralizing practices from equipment in our inventory.
One of the obstacles after fire damage is removing harsh odors from the property. This is an intricate process that begins as early as the mitigation phase and continues through the final steps of restoration in the property after much of the cleanup completes. Our SERVPRO of Western Union County team helps make it “Like it never even happened” when you call (908) 791-9177.

A Guide to Performing Commercial Water Removal in New Providence
SERVPRO mitigates water damage in New Providence hotels, motels, and commercial structures without disturbing the patrons or customers
SERVPRO Can Perform Commercial Water Restoration in New Providence
Water damage can happen in commercial establishments like hotels due to several issues, including burst pipes, faulty appliances, and roof leaks. Water can cause long-term problems in your hotel, such as warping of wooden structures, mold growth, and bad odors that can turn guests away. As a responsible business owner, it is advisable to hire an experienced firm like SERVPRO to assist you in bringing things back to normal and continuation of service for your customers.
Our water restoration technicians (WRT) can perform commercial water removal in your New Providence hotel quickly and efficiently. We take fast action to prevent secondary destruction and to reduce restoration costs. To restore your property, we can take several steps, including:
- Locating the water source
- Erecting containment
- Water extraction
- Drying and dehumidification
Locating the water source
Our SERVPRO team can use infrared cameras to inspect and monitor the moisture in affected building materials. They work by displaying infrared images. At the beginning of a water repair project, infrared cameras offer a quick evaluation of the moisture’s extent. With them, we can determine how water traveled throughout the affected areas. At the end of the water restoration process, these devices offer excellent proof that drying was successful.
During a water restoration project, contaminants can spread to unaffected areas due to foot traffic, debris removal, movement of equipment, and air movements. Our SERVPRO team can prevent pollutants from spreading to uncontaminated regions by using appropriate engineering controls like establishing negative pressure and building containment.
Our SERVPRO technicians can use extraction equipment to remove water from the flooring. We also have deep extraction tools that we can attach to extractors. For instance, we can use self-propelled extraction tools to remove water from carpets. An independent motor powers these tools. They work by compressing carpeting and pad, squeezing out water, and removing the water through an extractor’s vacuum system.
Drying and dehumidifying
We use drying and dehumidifying equipment to increase the evaporation rate, and remove water vapor from the air.

When the firefighters leave your New Providence residence--Then SERVPRO is prepared for smoke and fire damage cleanup and restoration
SERVPRO Provides Efficient Fire Damage Repairs in New Providence
Fire has a devastating impact on homes. It creates potentially expensive structural destruction and can leave premises uninhabitable for a long time. A delay in hiring professional fire restorers can cause further deterioration of the affected structures and contents.
SERVPRO can perform expert fire damage restoration in your New Providence residence. Water damage often accompanies fire damage due to firefighting efforts. We have the equipment required to tackle the combination of soot, ash, and water. Our fire cleanup services may include:
- Removing debris
- Smoke damage cleanup
- Water removal and drying
If there is water, our SERVPRO team can remove it using pumps and then dry the affected areas using air-moving equipment. Air movers work by enhancing evaporation at the surface level and replacing the saturated, cool boundary layer with drier, warmer air from dehumidifiers.
After a fire, smoke residues can travel from areas that differ in pressure and temperature, causing soot damage and odors to spread throughout a house. Therefore, it is essential to clean the affected area beyond the debris and visual damage before conducting aesthetic restoration. Some smoke residues are corrosive to surfaces. Our SERVPRO team can wipe residues off light-colored painted surfaces, plastic surfaces, Formica countertops, and the tops of furniture with finished surfaces. We can also clean and protect metal surfaces, which contain iron and chrome trim.
Smoke residues contain solid particles that mainly consist of carbon. The moisture that contacts the particles might cause them to get absorbed by the surfaces and get difficult to remove. We can remove dry particles loosely attached to surfaces by vacuuming. Our SERVPRO team usually vacuums dry smoke residues from surfaces before applying wet cleaning products.
SERVPRO of Western Union County can help you to tackle fire damage responsibly. Our 24-hour hotline is (908) 791-9177.
What Water Damage Threatens New Providence Homes This Winter?
SERVPRO mitigates the water damage caused by frozen pipes and ice dams on a New Providence Roof. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.
Knowing how winter weather can cause flood or water damage ultimately protects your New Providence home.
The winter season can bring joy as well as traumatic experiences for area homes and businesses. When harsh weather conditions expose the vulnerabilities of your structure, water damage and costly flooding can result.
Snowmelt and Ice Jamming Flooding
There are many threats to the region, including natural flooding, frozen pipes and ice damming New Providence homes might endure. Natural flooding caused by ice jamming and rapid snowmelt has a similar strength and destructive tendency as flash flooding.
One of the common callouts for our experienced team is the damage resulting from a broken or burst pipe after it freezes under harsh winter conditions. Insufficient insulation and lack of warm air circulation are often to blame.
Is Ice Damming a Common Concern?
Spotty insulation in the attic against the roof can cause heat loss through portions of the roof. Will Trapped Water in Exterior Walls of New Providence Homes Dry Naturally?
Please don't let your home dry on its own, call SERVPRO of Western Union County today.
Often moisture in wall assemblies should be addressed immediately to protect New Providence properties.
Whether burst pipes, leaking connections, or flood damage, exterior walls can be heavily damaged by moving water. Because moist conditions do not often resolve themselves quickly without prompt action, our SERVPRO team is ready to help.
Using Moisture Detection Equipment
Overcoming water damage in New Providence homes begins with determining where these threats exist. Moisture detection equipment in our inventory becomes an asset in tracking the movement of water through structural elements. When exterior walls, housing plumbing, and other fixtures suffer moisture damage, specific detection tools can be helpful in learning which building materials have been most heavily impacted.
Controlled Demolition and Inspection
One of the next steps to restoring water damage to exterior wall systems is eliminating affected materials. The initial evaluation of the property can determine where moisture exists and the likely migration of these damp pockets through sensitive materials often used in the construction of framing and the building envelope. Affected materials might include:
- OSB Board
- Felt Paper
Thorough Drying Solutions
Regardless of how much of the wall system needed removal, the next step in this process is applying drying equipment to the situation and beginning evaporative work. With limited removal like flood cuts, low-profile centrifugal air movers are ideal for infusing structural cavities with dry air. More thorough removal of wall assemblies can make a greater variety of drying tools possible in the restoration.
It is always smart to actively choose to dry and restore water damage rather than assuming or hoping that natural evaporation will occur. Our SERVPRO of Western Union County team can help with effective drying and mitigation strategies starting as soon as we arrive at the damaged property. We are ready to help 24/7 at (908) 791-9177.
Factors that Impact Restorability of Fire-Damaged Berkeley Heights Homes
A fire can be overwhelming all on its own, not to mention what steps need to be taken. Call SERVPRO of Western Union County for help.
Variables of structural cleaning impact the ease of restoration for Berkeley Heights residences.
Structural cleaning is necessary after soot and smoke exposures, but this process can happen in several ways. Choosing the ideal approach shortens restoration time and better protects the property overall.
A Thorough Pre-Job Scoping
The earliest stage of fire damage restoration for Berkeley Heights homes and businesses is a thorough assessment of the property. Knowing where damage exists and the extent of work to be done can focus restoration efforts and ensure technicians arrive with the appropriate tools.
Structural Cleaning Variables to Consider
Choosing the right cleaning approach is not universal to fire loss scenarios. Multiple variables determine how to restore affected structural elements and contents, including:
- Washable or Non-Washable – One of the main determining factors for the restorability of specific materials is the cleaning they can endure. Some affected surfaces cannot support wet cleaning of any kind.
- Porosity – How readily that smoke odors and soot particles can infiltrate surfaces to impact the composition of the material is a deciding factor in choosing the best cleaning option for the damage.
- Type of Soil – Soil is often either water-based or oil-based, and this will require very different cleaning approaches to resolve.
Choosing the Best Cleaning Approach
As soon as you have determined the type of damage and the affected materials, our team can decide the ideal cleaning solution. Often, soot removal can require either wet cleaning approaches or dry removal tactics. Harsh soil deposits typically need the dissolving or emulsification effects of specific chemical compounds in our inventory.
Many obstacles can most certainly stand in the way of effective and efficient fire restoration and recovery. When a fire threatens your residence, our SERVPRO of Western Union County team responds fast with leading equipment and experienced technicians to make it “Like it never even happened.” We are ready to help 24/7 at (908) 791-9177.

Are Move-Outs Mandatory After Fire Damage in New Providence Homes?
Fire damage restoration for your home is an easy choice. SERVPRO IICRC certified technicians will be ready at a moment's notice to help.
SERVPRO Evaluates the Loss to Determine Whether Move-Outs Are Best Suited for the Situation
Disorganization and accumulation of debris are characteristic in homes after a fire incident and may necessitate relocating some items. Moving items creates order and, more importantly, frees up space to complete cleanup conveniently at your New Providence home.
Since, in many cases, restoration of fire damage in New Providence homes is possible without performing a move-out, you should evaluate the situation to determine whether the incident at your premises necessitates one and how best to do it. When you involve a professional like SERVPRO, decision-making is much simpler.
A move-out is necessary after fire damage if:
- Some items require specialized cleaning
- Vast sections of the structure, especially ceilings, are heavily soiled
- Other restorative actions, apart from cleaning, are necessary, like demolition
Moving items haphazardly can create more problems than what you want to avoid. For instance, mixing heavily soiled items with clean ones transfers the soiling, increasing the number of items you need to clean. Breakage and staining are also possible problems when items are poorly handled. SERVPRO can help you avoid such issues by carefully managing the move-out. For instance, we evaluate and group items based on damage levels and materials.
Preparing the contents to be moved also helps ensure the cleanup process runs smoothly. Our SERVPRO technicians pre-clean and dry contents before packing them for transportation. Using several packing boxes is also essential.
SERVPRO of Western Union County can help you choose the best solutions to address fire damage in your home, “Like it never even happened.” Call us at (908) 791-9177.
How Materials Influence Water Mitigation in Berkeley Heights Properties
Water damage is no easy task to handle. SERVPRO water damage specialists are here to help 24/7 365 days a year.
SERVPRO Focuses on Three Main Aspects of Materials to Determine Their Effect on Restoration
Whenever water leaks into a property, one of the main factors determining the type or level of damages is the materials present in the affected areas. Therefore, understanding how moisture interacts with different materials is essential for water mitigation to be successful.
Materials exhibit three main characteristics that can influence the water mitigation process in your Berkeley Heights home. The three factors have to do with water absorption since moisture only causes damage if materials absorb it. SERVPRO has IICRC-certified water restoration technicians who understand the different characteristics materials exhibit when exposed to water.
The materials in your home can be broadly classified based on:
- Permeance levels
- Vapor barrier
If the water released into your property affects materials with a high permeance rate, mitigation mostly involves extraction with wet vacuums followed by drying. Otherwise, it is impossible to get rid of the water, leading to additional deterioration like rotting and mold. Typical materials with a high permeance factor include carpets and upholstery items. Low permeance factors simplify restoration since water can be easily wiped off. Also, the exposed material does not deteriorate from extended contact.
Another category of material is vapor barriers which include waterproof substances of those with a permeance of 1. Such materials either block moisture from passing through or limit the amount passing through to a minimum. Some vapor barriers you might have in your home include masonry bricks, glossy paint, and Kraft paper insulation. As the name suggests, vapor barriers can block your mitigation efforts by delaying moisture release from surrounding materials. Our SERVPRO technicians use various approaches, including perforation or stripping off the barrier.
SERVPRO of Western Union County evaluates materials, thus delivering quality results during water mitigation. Call us at (908) 791-9177. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

SERVPRO Enhances Methods Such as Vacuuming Minimizing the Addition of Moisture Into the Premises
When you notice mold contamination at your New Providence public facility, you need to understand several things, including the harmful role moisture plays in proliferating the problem. Therefore, extracting moisture or avoiding introducing new moisture in the facility during cleaning are two essential aspects of remediation.
Thoroughly cleaning your New Providence premises during mold remediation without introducing moisture can be challenging since some residues and stains may necessitate wet cleaning. One way to achieve effective dry cleaning is by involving a professional like SERVPRO since we can enhance procedures such as vacuuming or using blast cleaning, which delivers exemplary results.
Effective vacuum cleaning to remove soiling from mold requires:
- The right type of vacuum cleaner
- Sufficient training on the use of vacuum cleaners
- Keen observation when vacuuming different surfaces
Various factors determine a good vacuum cleaner. For instance, a lightweight model that is simple to use is essential in ensuring sufficient attention is given to all affected areas. Some features, such as a separate vacuum motor and brush drive motor, improve the removal of embedded mold residues. SERVPRO teams have the best vacuum cleaners since we keep up with changing trends in the cleaning sector.

On discovering water intrusion at your New Providence retail store, you may expect that simply wiping wet areas and opening a couple of windows to air the place is sufficient intervention. However, if the spillage involves significant water amounts, your efforts may not be sufficient.
When planning water restoration for your New Providence retail store, you must pay attention to several factors to ensure your efforts bear fruit. The variety of materials in the affected areas matters since water spreads uniformly, but materials react differently when exposed to moisture. For instance, you should anticipate different effects on furnishings, structural materials, and stock items. SERVPRO provides the technical knowledge to handle various materials during restoration.
Some of the expected restoration actions during an exercise include:
- Water extraction
- Manipulation of contents
- Cleaning up different soils
- Specialized drying of materials
The variety of work needed to complete the restoration process is what complicates it beyond your expectations. However, involving a professional from the start can help you take back control since the professional has a deeper understanding and sufficient resources. For instance, SERVPRO checks for any factors that might hinder restoration before starting the process.
Typical hindrances that can delay or stop the restoration process include:
- Different materials cross-staining or soiling
- Materials acting as moisture barriers delaying drying
- Non-uniform drying of semi-porous materials
SERVPRO also takes simple steps to overcome any of the obstacles. For instance, our IICRC-certified technicians can readily and safely move your valuables, such as the stock items, from the shelves creating room for other restoration tasks. We can also evaluate the materials to establish whether any moisture barriers might cause delays. Removing wallpaper or perforating gloss paint are some simple actions that remove the barriers. We also have advanced extraction equipment to fast track the removal of any pooling water and drying wet materials.
SERVPRO of Western Union County handles any water restoration exercise professionally to eliminate soiling or moisture accumulation, "Like it never even happened." Call us at (908) 791-9177.
What Determines Whether Flood Damage in Berkeley Height Properties Can Be Repairable?
Regardless of whether flooding comes from a storm or equipment malfunction, the end result is the same - excess water. Contact SERVPRO right away.
SERVPRO Relies on Advanced Skills and Industry Experience to Determine the Best Flood Restoration Approach
Flooding can cause significant destruction to a property within a short period. The damages can be salvageable or unsalvageable, and sometimes, it is hard to tell where the damage in your Berkeley Heights home falls.
Embarking on the restoration of flood damage at your Berkeley Heights home without having an idea of what the likely outcomes could be may not be very strategic. You might waste effort focusing on irreversible damage or ignore salvageable materials because the soiling seems too extreme. For instance, our SERVPRO restoration teams do not waste time cleaning carpets and pads affected by groundwater since it is impossible to rid them of contaminants.
One way to simplify decision making is by separating items into groups of:
- Salvageable moisture and soiling damage
- Unsalvageable from any type of physical damage
- Questionable general damage
Separating materials based on damage level has many benefits, including saving time since material evaluation does not take too long. Also, once grouped, you can focus on the materials that need immediate intervention. Flood damage worsens over time. For instance, organic materials like wood can develop mold within two days, while rust in metal is expected in a couple of days. Therefore, an action that expedites restoration essentially reduces such additional problems.
Grouping materials also creates time for restoration tasks that may require extra attention. For instance, our SERVPRO technicians can pack out the materials deemed questionable, thus creating an opportunity for advanced cleaning, decontamination, or any other restoration procedure.
The decision whether to proceed with specific restoration tasks depends on:
- The value of the items
- The restoration costs
- Availability of resources to handle the restoration
SERVPRO of Western Union County takes appropriate action for convenience, cost-effectiveness, and acceptable outcomes after flood damage. Call us at (908) 791-9177. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.
What Type of Water Mitigation is Necessary for New Providence Homes After a Pipe Burst?
When a pipe bursts in your home, the situation can be quite unexpected. Contact SERVPRO right away to remediate the water damage in your home.
SERVPRO Helps Extract Moisture, Remove Deteriorated Materials and Perform Water Damage Repairs as Needed in New Providence Properties
Look up. You may only see areas here and there where pipes run through the ceiling of your New Providence property, but the ceiling in most rooms is a major hub for the plumbing in your home. And it is a good idea to inspect all areas of your home, including the ceilings, for signs of water damage.
Handling water mitigation on a New Providence ceiling leak can present additional challenges, such as the effect of gravity on the water damage incident. The weight of the moisture within a ceiling means as the sheetrock gets saturated and deteriorates from the water, it can also fall and cause injury. SERVPRO advises homeowners to avoid areas in their property with sagging ceilings.
SERVPRO technicians have significant training in handling all types of damage from water in homes and working safely when the issue emanates from a ceiling. The technicians can use their equipment to identify how widespread the wicking of the moisture is within the ceiling and how much needs to get removed to make the room safe. Only the damaged portions get removed; the rest will get dried and left intact to lessen the cost of replacing the building materials in the home. The water restoration training of technicians enables them to:
- Identify potential safety issues
- Sort items in the room to identify salvageable articles
- Remove musty water odors
- Apply proactive treatments against mold growth
A ceiling leak requires prioritization of the restoration services. Even though the same actions get taken, each job is diverse, with challenges unique to the property getting assistance. SERVPRO techs ascertain the building materials affected and prioritize the steps needed for the best outcome. Some tasks may require more urgency because hesitating can lead to additional damages that can cost property owners more money to repair in the future. A core part of the training the techs receive is learning to identify what to prioritize. For instance, if a ceiling leak affects wood floorboards in a home, water extraction becomes the most critical application during the water restoration service.
With the assistance of SERVPRO of Western Union County

How Can You Lessen the Need for Fire Damage Restoration in a Berkeley Heights Business Property?
Commercial fire damage can really change the course of your business. Contact SERVPRO for effective cleanup and fire damage remediation services.
SERVPRO Can Inspect and Perform All Types of Fire Safety and Damage Cleanup in Berkeley Heights
Fire damage in a Berkeley Heights business property does not simply occur due to bad luck. The post-fire investigation often uncovers the reason for the blaze, and in many cases, it could have been avoided.
To decrease the potential for a Berkeley Heights business to need fire damage restoration, SERVPRO recommends putting some or all of the following actions into regular practice:
- Set up regular fire safety drills
- Inspect the property for fire hazards
- Set up the SERVPRO app for your business property
Companies involved in producing goods that include flammable materials such as solvents are particularly susceptible to fires. The area where supplies get stored should not be near outlets or where a spark could occur. A solid fire prevention policy can include the safe storage of chemicals and comprehensive knowledge of what to do in case of a fire.
The benefits of an established fire safety policy for a company are many. Performing regular inspections and establishing best practices for storing and using flammable chemicals and more actually works to reduce the likelihood of a fire. Certain situations, such as a lightning strike, are unavoidable; however, many situations are.
Many business owners have push-back at the expense of implementing a fire prevention training program. However, this level of training for employees has repeatedly shown that the results justify the cost. This is particularly true when a fire can shut down a facility for days or weeks while it undergoes a fire damage restoration.
When every employee knows how to handle a fire extinguisher, a fire hose, or smother flames under a fire blanket, it makes the area a little safer and can work to lessen fire damage to a structure or contents because each employee knows what to do.
SERVPRO of Western Union County at (908) 791-9177 brings professional fire damage restoration to every Berkeley Heights job.

If paintings or photos are framed under glass, inspect the article to determine if condensation is building on the inside of the glass and remove the piece if necessary. Avoid placing damp artworks or photos in direct sunlight as it can cause the paper to curl.
SERVPRO IICRC-certified technicians have specialized equipment for handling wet documents or books. Even if they are covered with mud or silt, there can be restoration potential on a case-by-case basis. The technicians often rely on the same methods used by the Library of Congress to preserve historical documents and books. Why Should Berkeley Heights Residents Be Particularly Concerned about Flood Damage?
Recent heavy storm affected your area? Team SERVPRO can help with water removal and flood damage remediation services. Call right away.
There Are Many Good Reasons Why Potential Flood Damage Should Concern Locals.
Berkeley Heights residents benefit greatly from the town’s picturesque natural environment, but sometimes also suffer at the hands of it. This circumstance arises because of the area’s heavy rains and sometimes violent, stormy weather, coupled with its swampy, flood-prone topography.
Experienced flood restoration firms like SERVPRO know the potential flood damage threats Berkeley Heights homeowners face. These result from a myriad of interrelated natural and manufactured causes, like the:
- Area’s heavy rainfall during the summer and fall months, which makes the town rainier than the national average and one of the rainiest places in New Jersey
- Powerful hurricanes and Nor’easters that annually impact the state, rapidly deluging the region in inches of rain and overflowing local waterways
- Low-lying, swampy nature of the town’s land that prevents it from quickly draining off excess storm waters
- Poorly designed or storm debris-clogged city drainage systems
- Region’s overdevelopment which blocks natural drainage networks and hinders floodwater subsidence
As a consequence of these various issues, town residents are more likely to require biohazard remediation, water removal services, and water damage repairs than people in other communities. Therefore, it is in their best interest to be mindful of local flood risks and plan ahead.
Considering all this, SERVPRO of Western Union County wants to help you clean up and restore your flood-damaged home if you ever suffer a flooding event. Call us whenever you need us at (908) 791-9177.

The effects of trapped moisture

What Fire Restoration Steps Fix Grease Fire Damage Well In New Providence Hotels?
For fast and efficient remediation services, you can count on SERVPRO. We are available 24/7.
SERVPRO Uses Specialized Cleaning Techniques during Water & Fire Damage Restorations
Apart from the open flames in your hotel kitchen, other issues such as grease increase the risk of fire damage. When such damage occurs, it is necessary to complete restoration fast and, if possible, without affecting other property sections is crucial.
Fire restoration in New Providence may require extensive demolition and rebuilding of the kitchen area where the fire starts. In the other areas, smoke damage might be the only issue, so cleaning is enough.
One way to prevent debris from spreading from the demolished area is to set up a containment barrier on the doorway or other openings connecting the kitchen to the rest of the hotel. Our SERVPRO technicians then embark on removing all unsalvageable structural materials and fixtures. We then begin on cleanup using abrasive methods such as sanding to remove charring or smoke deposits from the affected surfaces. Alternatively, blast cleaning using a medium such as sodium bicarbonate also helps remove greasy residues, charring, and odor. Fortunately, stainless steel is commonly used in commercial kitchens for many fixtures. This hard surface generally can wipe down easily using the correct cleansers and detergents.
With our services, you can easily resolve the issues affecting your business operations, including:
- Fire and smoke damage
- Smoke damage
- Water & fire damage restorations

Mold is a serious issue that should be taken care of right away. Don't wait, call in the experts at SERVPRO!
SERVPRO Tears Down Assemblies to Facilitate Mold Removal in New Providence Homes
Mold can grow silently within wall cavities without any visible signs, especially if there is a cover such as wallpaper fixed atop the drywall panels that hide the early telltale signs of mold, including spots and patches. Seeking help from mold specialists immediately you realize there is a problem is essential.
Wall assemblies are made up of different materials, so the mold damage in your New Providence property is likely to vary. The porous materials such as drywall and insulation are heavily affected since hyphae penetrate such materials as the mold exploits the organic matter as a food source. Tearing down and removing such materials is the best solution. The wooden frames and other structural elements can remain, but they require treatment to contain the infestation.
Tearing down moldy materials is a risky process since it can release harmful residues and spores all over the house, endangering everyone in the vicinity. Our SERVPRO technicians wear protective equipment like respirators and bodysuits. We also set up containment enclosures around the sections we demolish to ensure the moldy residues remain in place. We also use Sporicides to treat the structural elements before drying the property. Our services are ideal for addressing:
- Black mold
- Attic mold
- Bathroom mold removal

SERVPRO Provides Advanced Resources to Handle Any Water Cleanup Exercise in Berkeley Heights
Bedroom communities are areas populated mainly for residential purposes rather than commercial or industrial uses. Berkeley Heights Township, nestled in the Raritan Valley region, is one such community, so a case of flooding can displace many people from their homes.
The name Berkeley Heights was chosen on November 6 1951. Earlier it had been known as New Providence Township, a name chosen during its incorporation on November 8 1809. The township was named after John Berkeley, an English loyalist soldier, diplomat, and politician. He was one of the founders of the province of New Jersey, the British colony that would later become New Jersey State.
Important Geographical Features in the Area
The area has varying geographic features that provide exciting scenery for residents and visitors.
The township partially covers Watchung Mountain’s second Crest. The mountains, which were once known as the Blue Hills, offer scenic viewpoints overlooking New Jersey, New York, and Newark skylines.
The river forms the town’s northern border. One of the fascinating places to spend time along the river is Passaic River Park which is part of the 298 non-contiguous acres of parkland running along the river known as the three "emerald necklaces." The other two parks are outside Berkeley Heights.
- Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge
The township borders the wildlife refuge set up in 1960 as the first federal wilderness area in the United States. Its success inspired the establishment of other similar areas, and the number has risen over the years to over 550.
Other Attractions in the Area
There are alternative attractions apart from the natural features. Museums such as the Little-Lord Farmstead offer information about the area. The farmstead is a pastoral site reminiscent of the agricultural past of the county. The Deserted Village of Feltville-Glenside Park is another unique attraction in the area. The park comprises a carriage house, eight houses, a church, and a general house. The buildings are remnants of what was a mill town that date back to the 18th century.

Essentially a puritan colony, New Providence's early life was focused on agriculture and trade along the Passaic River. The borough is home to several townships, including Berkeley Heights and historic hamlets. To the Northeast is the Great Swamp reservation which is home to over 244 bird species. The natural habitat is part of the National Wildlife Refuge System which seeks to preserve native wildlife. The Great Swamp Reservation has over 7,768 acres of land-mass, full of visitable wildlife centers like the Wildcat Ridge Refuge and the Willowwood Arboretum.
New Providence is characterized by its surrounding wetlands and wildlife centers but has evolved to provide contemporary theater, historical tours, and performing arts. The Mayo Center, Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, and the Paper Mill Playhouse are all within ten miles of the borough, offering a rotating selection of contemporary and traditional theatre. The New Jersey Performing Arts Center in nearby Newark regularly hosts the most refined international orchestras and symphonies. Some of its historic sites include Washington's Headquarters, a temporary base of operations during the American Wars, and Jockey Hollow, a winter encampment for the continental army during the eighteenth century.
- The Morris Museum of Arts and Sciences on Normandy Heights Road is run by a non-profit that seeks to celebrate the surrounding area's natural history. The center runs regular interactive exhibitions and tours that complement its substantial permanent collection.
- Branch Brook Park is a reservation for over 4,000 cherry trees, making it one of the largest collections of Japanese plants in the United States. The blossoming season is accompanied by a festival that attracts thousands of visitors to the New Providence region each year.
- The Museum of Early Trades and Crafts on Main Street boasts a collection of pre-industrial farming and agricultural equipment. Unique to the New Providence area, this collection explores how some of the earliest settlers in the regions survived in the seventeenth century.

SERVPRO can provide flood damage mitigation and get your business back on track
New Providence played a role in the Revolutionary War when the Battle of Short Hills took place. The British troops, led by General Howe, and the Continental Army, led by Brigadier General William Alexander, clashed on June 26, 1777.
Defending the Watchung Mountains
General Howe, during this time, was trying to lure the Continental Army into a vulnerable position. To do this, his troops had marched into central New Jersey. The goal was for the British to be in a better position to defend the Watchung Mountains. But General Washington wasn’t budging. This led to Howe returning to his previous location in Amboy.
Following the Shadows
Unbeknownst to Howe, several of Washington’s divisions and Lord Stirling’s (Brigadier General Alexander) division shadowed the British. Washington then moved his main army away from the hills. On June 26, Howe took advantage of the situation and sent out troops to cut Washington off from the high ground.
A Skirmish Leads to a Battle
As Howe’s columns marched through the Short Hills regions, they met with Stirling’s guards. A skirmish ensued with the Americans falling back as they gave fire. Stirling set up a defensive position as the retreating soldiers drew the British into Ash Swamp and Scotch Plains. Even though he was determined to stay put, the British cannon and numbers forced him back. But he didn’t stay put for long.
British Lose the Day
The British troops were lagging under the heat, so they ended the pursuit. This allowed Stirling to a stronger position. Washington was alerted to the fact Howe was close by and was able to withdraw his men to a more secure location. This became a strategic battle for the Americans. Stirling gave Washington time enough to tighten his defense, and Howe declared Washington’s lines too strong to attack. By June 30th, the British had evacuated New Jersey.
Battle of Short Hills Historic Trail
Today visitors can explore the path of the soldiers through Metuchen and Edison historical sites. It continues through the:
- Frazee House
- Ash Brook Reservation
Much of the areas where the battle took place has been developed. This is one area that is much the same as it was back then. One of the goals of the Colonials was to bog down the British cannons in the Ash Swamp. It is a fascinating look into a critical battle that led to American winning the War of Independence.
Choosing the Correct Drying System Remediates Flood Damage to New Providence Businesses
When storms send floodwaters raging through your business, it can shut you down for days. Getting SERVPRO involved in the cleanup can mean opening faster. Determining the correct drying system is the key to restoring your business correctly. For efficient drying, we must:
- Achieve a balance between air movement, humidity, and temperature
- Measure and monitor moisture trapped inside porous building materials
Once everything is taken into consideration, we then choose between an open or closed drying system. Closed drying often works best in commercial buildings. We can accelerate the drying by partitioning off flood-impacted areas into smaller drying sections. We then use:
- Air movers
For commercial flood damage services, contact SERVPRO of Western Union County at (908) 791-9177. We can put you back in business.

It’s a Great Way to Learn More About the Berkeley Heights & New Providence Past
Imagine putting two houses, built at different times and at different locations, together to become one residence. That is precisely what happened with the Salt Box Museum. Formerly known as the Garrison/Dickinson/Genung House, the museum is an absolute delight for history lovers.
When you enter the building, half of the house on your left was most likely built in the early 19th century. Augustus Garrison, the Presbyterian Church Sexton, had the house moved in the mid-1800s. The newer side, in the saltbox shape, was moved and joined with the other side. The entire house was moved in 1967 to 1350 Springfield Ave, New Providence.
You can see all kinds of memorabilia and artifacts from the American Revolution. Some of the items pre-date the war. It is a fascinating look at an earlier time. The museum is currently accepting tours by appointment. Call (908) 665-1034 to schedule a time to take the tour. Free admission.

New Providence Businesses Depend on Us to Keep Their Business Going
Located on the Passaic River, New Providence is a beautiful borough in New Jersey. Almost 10% of the land in New Providence is protected parkland, publicly-owned, which the residents often enjoy. A borough is a form of government used in New Jersey by a good portion of municipalities. While a borough does have a mayor, he has limited power. Most of the executive and legislative functions get carried out by the council.
Purchased from the Lenape Indians
New Providence history began back in 1664. The Duke of York, brother to King Charles II, bought the land from the Lenape Indians. It was known as the Elizabethtown Tract. It wasn't until 1720 that the Puritans established a settlement. There were many wild turkeys in the area, so it became known as "Turkey Town." This was the first permanent settlement in the area.
A Church is Established & A Name Change
In 1737 the Presbyterian Church was started. In 1759 the church's balcony collapsed, but miraculously there were only minor injuries. The church believed this was God's hand of protection on them, and this resulted in the town's name being changed to New Providence.
George Washington Slept Here
The borough's local stream, Salt Brook, is so named because of an incident that took place when the colonial village dumped all their salt into the brook to prevent the British soldiers from claiming it. Local tradition has it that George Washington visited the area and spent the night in a home which can still be seen today. But the British soldiers never ended up crossing the Watchung Mountains into the area.
Population Increases - Becoming a Borough
Springfield Township was formed in April of 1794 and included not only the present-day township but:
- New Providence
- Berkeley Heights
Due to substantial growth in the region, the New Providence Township was formed on November 8, 1809. New Providence withdrew from the New Providence Township on March 14, 1899. It was at that time they reincorporated as a borough. Many townships in New Jersey were choosing to become boroughs at this time for economic reasons and to govern themselves.
Nokia Bell Labs
Located in the New Providence neighborhood of Murray Hill, Nokia Bell Labs is an industrial, scientific development and research company. It is owned by Nokia, which is Finnish but is an American company. It was previously:
- Bell Telephone Laboratories (1925-1984)
- AT&T Bell Laboratories (1984-1996)
- Bell Labs Innovations (1996-2007)
The lab got its beginnings in the late 19th century in New York City as part of the Western Electric Engineering Department. It was reformed into the Bell Telephone Laboratories in 1925. Bell Lab researchers are credited with developing:
- Radio astronomy
- The transistor
- The photovoltaic cell
- The charge-coupled device (CCD)
- The information theory
- Unix operating system
- Programming languages B, C, C++, and S
Bell Laboratories have been awarded nine Nobel Prizes for their work.
It All Started with Alexander Graham Bell
When Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in 1880, he was awarded the Volta Prize by France. This equaled roughly $10,000 then and about $270,000 in 2019. Graham would invest the money into the Volta Laboratory's development, today known as the Alexander Graham Bell Laboratory, in Washington, D.C. His cousin, Chichester Bell, and Sumner Tainter would collaborate with him on the project. It has also been known as:
- Volta Bureau
- Bell Carriage House
- Bell Laboratory
Bell invented the telephone while looking for a way to communicate with the deaf. The focus of the lab was the analysis of sound, recording it, and transmitting sounds. The research was quite lucrative, and he used the money to further fund research and education into the deaf.
The Telephone is Patented & A Company is Formed
The first patents for the telephone were filed in 1876 by Bell, Thomas Sanders, and Gardiner Hubbard, as the Bell Patent Association. A year later, the Bell Telephone Company was born. In 1889 the company became part of the American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T). The Bell Laboratories headquarters was moved from New York City to Murray Hill.
Crucial research is still taking place at the Bell Lab in Murray Hill. It is a fundamental and essential part of New Providence. The scientific strides made since the time of Alexander Graham Bell have been phenomenal. The residents of the borough, and the world, look forward to the discoveries and inventions that will come from this committed business.
Salt Box Museum
Another landmark is the Salt Box Museum. It has a fascinating history, and visitors today can see memorabilia and artifacts from before the American Revolution era. The museum is located in what was actually two different houses. They were built at different times, and one half was later moved to the present location. At one point, the entire combined house was moved to the current location on Springfield Avenue.

Timely Response When Flood Damage Incidents Affect New Providence Properties
New Providence residents depend on the skilled experts at SERVPRO for restoration on their properties. Call right away, we are always available.
SERVPRO is Readily Accessible to New Providence Residents Affected by Flooding Incidents
An incident that happened in 1759 gave New Providence its current name. Initially, the area was known as Turkey because of the large flocks of wild Turkeys that used to roam the area. At the time, the Presbyterian Church was the nerve center of the settlement. One day a crowded balcony at the church collapsed, but miraculously nobody was injured. The residents considered the outcome a divine act of providence, which gave the future town its current name.
Currently, New Providence has a sparsely suburban feel with a population of over 12000. It is highly rated as friendly for families, with excellent public schools, a reasonable commute, plenty of outdoor activity areas, and the cost of living is not so high. There are several notable family restaurants and eateries in the area, including Italian restaurants such as Bellariva Pizzeria, Spanish Tavern of Mountainside, and Moe's Bistro for Mediterranean cuisine, among many other establishments. There are also farmers markets such as the Central Farmers Market located on Central Avenue, which ensure that residents have access to a wide range of fresh produce, sourced locally, nationally, and even imported, at very affordable prices.
Fun and Competition at the Swim Clubs
Swimming is another exciting way to spend time in New Providence since there are several swim clubs in the area. The history of swim clubs in the area is fascinating, especially considering the set up of the first community pool on Springfield Avenue in the early 1960s was fraught with challenges like lack of funds and opposition from some of the residents, even though it was a unique idea at the time. The New Providence Community Pool was the second one in the entire state. However, the project also had many supporters, including the mayor of the town, Frank LeBart. The budget for the construction was financed by individuals who co-signed for the loan or held bonds. By the time it was finished, over 900 families had signed up for yearly membership, which cost $35, making it an immediate success.
Today there are several clubs in the area which cater to recreational and professional interests. The most renowned clubs include:
- Crestview Swim Club
- Clearwater Swim Club
- Berkeley Aquatic Club
Crestview and Clearwater clubs have a longstanding competitive feud that stretches back over 30 years. At the beginning of summer, the two clubs present their best swimmers aged 6 to 18 to compete in timed swim races. The winning club gets the bragging rights for the rest of the season. Apart from beating the other club members, participants also try to beat individual or club records. Crestview at one time had a 12-year streak of back-to-back wins. The events also offer a chance for parents to spend time at the pool cheering the participants, providing refreshments, or even raising money that the clubs need for various purchases, thus keeping them relevant as times change.
Flooding and Other Disruptions from Hurricanes
Despite the fun and laid back feel of the area, some natural disasters such as hurricanes tend to affect the area disrupting activities and causing damages through flooding and other problems. Some of the notable incidents of that nature include hurricane Irene and Sandy.
- Hurricane Irene hit the area on August 28, 2011 and was the first time a hurricane had made landfall in the state of New Jersey since 1903. It led to widespread flooding since it involved heavy precipitation, with at least 18 hours of continuous rainfall recorded. The incident left widespread damages to various properties. The New Providence library reportedly spent $23,000 even though the total flooding at the facility was less than 4 inches.
- Hurricane Sandy affected the area on October 26, 2012. Its high-speed winds of up to 75MPH toppled many trees in the area leading to power outages in many properties and road closures, which cut people off. Apart from the physical damages caused by the hurricane, it also affected social aspects of life, including rescheduling Halloween celebrations and cancellation of a meeting set by the chamber of commerce.
Apart from storms and other adverse weather, the rivers in the area also cause flooding at times. The Passaic River, which runs along the border of New Providence, floods periodically due to heavy precipitation, debris accumulation, and issues related to property development. One of the reasons cited as the stumbling block to managing flooding from the river is the distributed ownership of the land through which it passes. Municipalities own some areas, others belong to the county, and individual landowners hold other sections. Therefore, developing comprehensive flood management plans is a challenge.
How Does SERVPRO Help With Flood Damage Management In New Providence?
When a flooding incident happens in New Providence, many factors can affect the response plan. For instance, flooding caused by storms also includes other factors such as road closure and power outage, which delay mitigation actions, thus worsening the damages. SERVPRO restoration teams prepare to respond even under challenging circumstances, helping homeowners avoid the issues that develop due to a delayed response.
Our customer care staff is reachable 24 hours a day. We help during the crucial early minutes of the incident when most distressed homeowners are confused and might not know which steps might be beneficial. Some of the steps that might help include:
- Turning off utilities such as power and gas at the mains
- Relocating movable items from lower sections of the property to minimize exposure to floodwaters
- Preparing for possible evacuation emergency supplies
Getting help when there is a significant flooding event can be a challenge since most people are occupied or cut off. SERVPRO crews step in at such times to fill the void. Our production trucks are pre-packed with the necessary resources, including protective clothing, to venture into flooded properties and useful utilities such as portable generators to serve as alternative power sources. Therefore, we set out immediately when requested to offer assistance.

With the location of New Providence, homeowners must contend with severe weather conditions that could potentially develop in any season of the year. As a leading storm damage restoration team in the region, our SERVPRO professionals stay prepared for situations that threaten your home and our neighborhoods. We keep stocked READY trailers at our facility loaded with extractors, drying tools, and EPA-approved cleaning products.
Our response to flood damage in New Providence homes and businesses can reduce the severity of loss situations for property owners when possible. As with most loss scenarios, storm and flood damage both have a finite timeline before their exposures to sensitive interior materials can have irreparable effects.
We must remain prepared for any of these loss situations with the right tools, personnel, and experience. Because we also have technicians on our roster with building experience, we can also provide immediate construction solutions to prevent the situation from worsening. We can also partner with other companies for a seamless solution to your flood loss. Each circumstance is unique after flooding, however, and much of it depends on the type of disaster. Our area is often threatened by four kinds of possible flooding scenarios, including:
How Can Severe Weather Cause Attic Flooding?
Because the area is known, in part, for severe weather systems that can pass through, homeowners understand how their roof could be vulnerable to damages. Hail, strong winds, and torrential rainfall can all have an immediate impact on shingled roofs. Harsh winter conditions like ice dams on the roof can also create access points for water damage.
- Extraction – Not all of the attic flooding scenarios require extensive extraction due to water migration concerns. However, tools like wet vacuums and light wands can have an impact on pooling to reduce saturation.
- Structural Assessment – Our technicians also pay attention to the roof's vulnerable points. Not only does temporary tarping need to begin, but a plan must get formulated for repairing this vital exterior system.
- Drying – Drying up the attic space can often happen in several ways, though the foundation of this effort relies on both air movers and dehumidifiers. Containment efforts can regulate temperature and airflow for more efficient evaporation.
What Are the Main Concerns with Flash Flooding?
Flash flooding can damage a home quickly and thoroughly, leaving homeowners struggling with the steps necessary to address all the pressing concerns. Because these conditions can change rapidly, our SERVPRO team must prepare for situations where multiple homes encounter the same devastating natural disaster. Each of our skilled technicians available to help appreciates the primary concerns with flash flooding scenarios, including:
- Debris – Debris and solids present an immediate risk to the house because it limits the available pumps and extractors that can get used to remove standing water in the damaged areas. Often, the choice involves self-priming trash pumps, truck-mount pumps, and wet vacuums.
- Contaminants – Water can encounter multiple substances, chemicals, and pollutants before reaching your home. It is not uncommon for the water to interact with hazardous substances such as sewage, oil, and other bacterial or viral pathogens in flooding situations. Exposure of contents and structural elements often requires removal and discarding.
- Organic Matter – From foliage and branches to animal carcasses or live creatures carried in with the flooding, organic matter removal must happen quickly before these elements begin to decay and deteriorate in the house.
- Odors – Decay, mud, sewage, and other substances brought into the house do more than damage surfaces and contents. Harsh smells can overwhelm a property after a flood, so our SERVPRO team must reduce the severity with counteractant products until the appropriate phase for full-scale deodorization arrives.
Does Natural Flooding Always Require Reconstruction?
There are a few instances of flooding that do not require some degree of repair and reconstruction. Because floodwater can penetrate exterior wall systems and take paths where structural vulnerabilities exist to reach inside your house, these access points must get resolved. Because we can call upon partnered contractors to respond along with our accredited technicians, we can offer both immediate construction solutions with tarping and board-up services, but also provide permanent build back once mitigation efforts complete.
Different types of flooding can create unique problems and obstacles for restoration in your home. With how devastating these loss events can become, it is essential to secure knowledgeable professionals to oversee your damaged residence's cleaning and recovery. Our SERVPRO of Western Union County team is standing by 24/7 at (908) 791-9177.

Why Should a Homeowner Look For Mold Removal Companies That Understand Containment?
Let SERVPRO help your New Providence property before mold spreads too far.
New Providence Homeowners Looking For The Most Effective Mold Removal Companies
Many people living in New Providence lead busy lives without much free time. That means that when you need to hire a contractor to take care of home repairs, you want the quickest and most efficient service.
This is especially true when you need mold removal companies in New Providence. No one wants mold in their home, so naturally, you want to have someone remediate it quickly. Mold removal is a complex process with several steps. Thankfully, SERVPRO of Western Union County knows how to get the best mold remediation results.
Adequate containment is key to mold removal. To understand why we first need to know how mold spreads and grows.
How does mold spread?
When you see a patch of mold in your home, you see something called the mycelium. This is a network of tiny tube-like cells called hyphae. Mold is parasitical, which means the mycelium grows by consuming the organic matter on which it lives. The food source is most likely to be wallpaper, drywall, wood, or canvas in your home.
Mold contains many microscopic mold spores. The spores detach from the mycelium and travel on the air currents. They can also travel on your clothes or shoes, your pets’ fur, or the HVAC system. To grow, mold needs:
- An organic food source
- Moisture (which is easy to come by in the bathroom, kitchen, or laundry room)
- The correct temperature and a dark environment
Once the spores find a place with the right conditions, they will form a new mycelium.
Can I stop mold from spreading?
It is challenging to stop spores from spreading because they are so small. You cannot see them, so you have no way of knowing if they are in the air or on your clothes. However, we can use containment to prevent spores from escaping during mold remediation.
What is containment and why does it matter?
Containment means setting up physical barriers to prevent mold spores from spreading. SERVPRO technicians set up a structure around the affected place, using plastic sheeting to cover the area and create a seal.
How does SERVPRO set up containment?
Our technicians know that there are a few things to be mindful of when setting up containment:
- It is not enough to cover the area – we need to cover windows and doors where we are working, too
- It is vital to cover all fans and vents
- Containment should not be larger than required, as smaller containments are more effective
- Containment structures should have as few seams as possible, and these seams must be tightly sealed, so there is less chance for spores to leak out
- A good setup is not enough – we also need to monitor the air pressure differential inside the structure
Does containment stop mold from coming back?
Unfortunately, it is not possible to stop mold from coming back. Because the spores are microscopic and can be found everywhere, they can re-enter your home. However, containment can help reduce the risk of this happening, because:
- It stops mold spores escaping into the rest of your home
- It increases the number of mold spores SERVPRO removes from the air
- It captures any mold spores that come loose during the mold cleanup process
What happens inside the containment area?
There are several things we can do to remediate mold inside the containment area. We use scrubbing, wiping, and gentle abrasion to remove mold colonies. We can apply disinfectants and microbial agents. In some areas, we can use baking soda blasting to rub away the mold.
We also bring in air scrubbers and negative air machines to capture spores. Air scrubbers have powerful filters that trap spores and stop them from re-entering the room. Negative air machines vent the contaminated air outside of your home, which removes spores and also changes the air pressure, so it is even more challenging for spores to escape.
Our technicians are vigilant about using protective equipment and removing it before entering the rest of your home so that we do not carry mold spores throughout your house.
What happens after mold remediation?
After mold remediation, we will deodorize your home. The air scrubbers we use during remediation are great for deodorizing, and we can also use carbon filters and a range of odor-eating products to get rid of leftover mold odors.
Our team will remove all traces of the containment structure, leaving your home “Like it never even happened.” We will also check in with you after a week to answer any questions.
If you need a mold removal company you can trust, call SERVPRO of Western Union County (908) 791-9177.
What Are the Three Main Signs That Your Water-Damaged Drywall Needs Replacement in Berkeley Heights?
Water damage in your home can be very stressful for you and your family. Contact SERVPRO 24/7 for professional remediation and mitigation services.
When drywall becomes saturated, there are many reasons that replacement might be better than drying for your Berkeley Heights home.
Because so much of your water service throughout your Berkeley Heights home is stored within the property walls, wall system elements like insulation and drywall become the first and most damaged of exposed materials. While not every situation requires the replacement and reconstruction of these damaged areas, understanding the signals that can indicate severe damage saves time and money when our SERVPRO team gets to work in the house after a water disaster.
What Are the Main Telling Signs That Drywall is Damaged?
When water damage repair in your Berkeley Heights home is necessary, this could indicate several actions that our professionals must take. Regarding damage to the drywall, there are typically several direct signs that severe and irreparable damage has occurred that requires our team's in-house contractors to begin controlled demolition efforts. By removing drywall portions, we can prevent further wicking of moisture to other undamaged panels. Some indicators that sheetrock must get replaced includes:
- Swelling/Bloating – Overexposure of gypsum board to humidity and water can often lead to swelling of the material, especially at the base closest to the floors.
- Sagging – When drywall gets used as a ceiling material, the weight of saturation can cause the board to begin drooping between the studs and eventually separate from screws altogether.
- Microbial Growth – Mold colonization, which often first becomes visible as spots on the surface, can usually indicate a need for material removal for remediation purposes.
Drywall is often one of the most sensitive materials that water comes into contact with in a house after a disaster. With how quickly these structural elements can get destroyed, our SERVPRO of Western Union County team must prepare for demolition and build back. Give our professionals a call anytime that you need us at (908) 791-9177.

Should I Restore or Sell My New Providence Home After Damage By A Fire?
Your decision to restore or sell your fire-damaged property should not be based on fear.
SERVPRO Helps New Providence Homeowners Understand Fire Damage Restoration Processes So That They Make the Best Decisions
In the aftermath of a fire, decision-making is probably one of the main challenges you face. For instance, you may debate within yourself whether to restore the home or sell it. Your apprehension for restoration may stem from the fear of dealing with contractors, city inspectors, and other parties whose expectations might not align with your specific goals. SERVPRO can help you restore your New Providence home to its preloss state hassle-free and thus save you the disadvantage of selling a damaged home.
What are the possible disadvantages of selling a fire-damaged home?
Although performing fire damage restoration at your New Providence home may seem like a hassle, selling has some challenges too, including:
• A significantly lower selling price compared to property value
• It can take time to find a buyer
• You have to cover the closing costs
Even when you decide to sell, some work around the property is still necessary since you need to protect the damaged house to stop further deterioration and possible liability issues in case someone is injured at the site.
Is it possible to carry out stress-free fire restorations?
With the right resources, the seemingly insurmountable restoration task is easier to handle. Engaging a professional restorer like SERVPRO gives you immediate access to all the resources needed to clean and repair damaged areas. We also help with the other inconvenient aspects of managing the restoration, including:
• Documenting the loss for insurance purposes
• Protecting the property during the renovation
• Safe handling of dangerous materials
• Ensuring all renovation process comply with government regulations
Loss documentation is an elaborate process that requires identification and proper recording of the loss details. With help from our technicians, you have the added advantage of having a trained eye scrutinizing the loss site, thus identifying some grave issues that you might dismiss. We also capture photos and videos of all the areas affected by the fire, thus making it easier to prove your claim.
What type of protection is necessary for a fire-damaged house?
After the fire is quelled, there is a need to board up the house to protect it from weather elements, small animals, and other dangers. Boarding up helps seal all openings created by the fire, whether it is shattered windows or openings on the walls. You might also need a temporary fence around the property to keep people from approaching the property. As already highlighted, protection is necessary whether you have chosen to sell or to restore the property.
In case of restoration, our SERVPRO technicians can help you board up the property easily. We use plywood panels and solid wood planks such as two-by-fours to create secure barriers around the doors, windows, and other openings that you would want to seal.
What is the best way to address dangerous materials found at the loss site?
The fear of injury or other adverse effects caused by dangerous materials at the fire loss site can make restoration seem like a risky proposition. However, knowing what risky materials to expect and having the right protective equipment to handle them minimizes the risk. Some of the typical dangerous materials found in fire-damaged houses include:
• Frayed or melted electrical cables
• Toxic substances like dioxin released from combustion
• Hazardous materials like asbestos or lead
Our SERVPRO technicians wear protective gear such as rubber boots and nitrile gloves when venturing into the damaged property. Visual inspection of the charred remains can help identify the main hazards to expect the loss site and the action to take. For instance, we can take specific containment steps, such as using heavy-duty sealable plastic bags to collect the materials. When performing cleaning procedures or other steps on areas with hazardous materials such as asbestos, disturbing the materials is the main threat. Our technicians identify any areas with such materials and avoid them until proper removal is possible.
What legal perspectives should I be aware of when restoring my property?
Flouting state or local authority rules can lead to penalties, especially on issues such as:
• Garbage and refuse management
• Housing rehabilitation
• Construction codes
• Obstruction of streets and sidewalks
However, that should not hinder the restoration of your property. Our crews receive up to date training on government regulations that affect any aspect of restoring damaged properties.
Your decision to restore or sell your fire-damaged property should not be based on fear. SERVPRO of Western Union County can help ensure you are fully informed. We also assist in lightening the load for you. Call us at (908) 791-9177. We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster.
Flood Removal Equipment for New Providence Homes
Getting water out of your house can be a tricky process when you don’t know who to call. Contact SERVPRO for mitigation and remediation services.
Flooding can be a widespread concern in area houses, but we have efficient tools to address these concerns.
While no two loss incidents are identical, the equipment necessary to restore and repair flood-damaged New Providence structures varies as well. There are many layers to flood recovery and cleanup, beginning with extraction and flood removal. Pooling water can be a considerable threat to a property when not immediately addressed, as all exposed materials and contents can start to absorb moisture based on their respective permeance.
The restoration and repairs following flood damage in New Providence residences and businesses hinge on efficient extraction solutions to begin as soon as possible. Depending on the type of flood damage present, namely, if there are solids present or not, the kind of extraction tools and water removal device varies. As is the case with many standing water concerns, submersible pumps are often among the most popular options for their versatility and continuous output until the property is ready for drying. Some of the extraction tools we use include:
Is an Electric Pump Ideal for Flood Removal?
Electric submersible pumps are among the most versatile of our removal tools, but they are adequate for situations where no debris is present. Because of a smaller intake and discharge, solids pose a threat to these pumps' operation and can render them ineffective when used in natural flooding scenarios. In these cases, trash pumps and the extractor trucks in our Green Fleet can be most effective.
Flooding can be a widespread concern in your residence that continually worsens until you resolve the need for flood removal with our inventory of powerful extraction devices. Give our SERVPRO of Western Union County team a call anytime you need us at (908) 791-9177.

SERVPRO Has the Skilled Water Restoration Technicians Necessary to Limit Loss to Your New Providence Property
Once you have water damage in your New Providence home, property drying is just part of the reason to call a highly-trained restoration team. Not all losses are the same when looking at water infiltration. Various kinds of water can bring on different results. SERVPRO features technicians trained via the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC) to handle any water situation you may face.
What are the Unique Categories of Water Damage?
When handling your need for water restoration in New Providence, our team breaks down water damage into several categories. Due to the variations in water types, trained restoration technicians have the skill necessary to adjust accordingly. This makes water damage restoration preferred over DIY methods alone. These unique classes are categorized based on contamination levels from different water source:
Clean Water – Category 1
By itself, category one water does not pose a significant health threat to humans or pets. This is water stemming from sanitary, clean sources. However, even though the water is clean directly from the source, this type of water damage is not without risk. Without proper extraction and drying measures, there is the potential for mold and mildew growth. Additionally, any clean water event can transform into a Category 2 even when it is left to degrade for too long. Various sources of clean water will include:
- Drinking fountains or bubblers
Gray Water – Category 2
With gray water, there is the potential for health risks for humans and pets. However, the threat is generally not overly significant or life-threatening. When Category 2 water sources are involved with your water damage, various biological, physical, or chemical contaminants are within. These elements are known for causing discomfort or potential illness should the water be consumed or with prolonged exposure. Various sources of gray water include:
- Stagnant or uncleaned Category 1 water
- Failed sump pumps
- Toilet water without the presence of fecal matter
- Washing machine or dishwasher discharge
Industry guidelines for black water describe it as being extremely unsanitary. Category 3 water contaminants are harmful and can lead to moderate to severe illness with exposure or ingestion. This is why this water contamination level must only be handled by highly-trained technicians that use property sanitation and safety techniques. Various sources of black water include:
- Stagnant or uncleaned Category 2 water
- Toilet water that contains fecal matter
- Groundwater containing chemicals, pesticides, and organic matter
Our team works to distinguish the type of water present within your home when we arrive at the job site. We take this information and formulate a plan to handle the water damage to minimize the risks to human health. It is vital that homeowners always remain aware of both Category 2 and Category 3 water due to the possible health concerns. Regardless of the water source, our skilled water restoration technicians (WRT) here at SERVPRO can start the cleanup and drying process to help minimize the impact on your health and your property.

What Can SERVPRO Do to Reopen My Motel Operation?
When overhead pipes are involved, a break that goes undetected overnight can shut down an entire block of rooms until the water removal in a New Providence motel is completed. Fortunately, SERVPRO is ready to support any size operation with a 24/7 response team.
Can the Response Team Save My Carpets During Removal?
In most cases, yes. Few commercial carpets have a pad underneath, so there is no need to lift and remove the carpet to dispose of the pad, which deteriorates quickly after it gets wet. Our team can immediately begin using water extractors to draw out all traces of the spill from the carpets. We can use Rovers, self-propelled ridden by a technician extractors, to squeeze out the water from the short-napped fibers. In addition to removal, the commercial devices team members use also have a heating element that helps them begin drying each carpet quicker than with a standard water-vac.
After removing the standing water, each room still needs drying out. If this is not done professionally, remaining traces of moisture can lead to a lingering, musty odor, and the possibility of mold growing overhead, in bathrooms, and under sinks. Team members open all doors and windows weather permitting, install box fans to draw out the damp air, and use air movers to direct warm airflow across the floors to dry them. By leading the airflow, they can also place the warm air directly into the overhead space to dry them thoroughly.
What about the damaged pipe and ceiling?
As the response team removes the water, other SERVPRO specialists can repair or replace many types of plumbing failures, as well as demolish and replace any ruined ceiling tiles and other types of paneling, to include drywall. If there is a problem needing specialized material, the team leader always recommends a licensed plumber.

What Can a Water Damage Restoration Company Do That I Can't?
When SERVPRO handles water damage restoration within New Providence homes, they use their advanced moisture detection equipment to rapidly determine if there is seepage under flooring, wicking within sheetrock, or in other non-exposed areas where water migrates.
Once the accurate scale of the loss area gets mapped out, the techs remove the water using their extraction equipment. One key element of the removal phase is when the maximum amount of moisture gets lifted, it works to lessen the time needed for drying the loss area and lends a hand towards a more favorable outcome from this type of damage.
When water contains sewage or has aged beyond 48 hours before cleanup started, the removal and disposal become more severe as it requires handling as a biohazard. When this situation arises, SERVPRO techs:
- Wear head to toe protective gear
- Test the water to determine the presence of any harmful elements
- Dispose of the water per state and federal regs
- Use professional-grade antimicrobial and antibacterial cleaning agents
The instantly recognizable musty odor that water can leave behind in a house gets neutralized through the use of the advanced equipment SERVPRO techs bring on-site. When the techs complete the restoration services, there are no reminders of the previous water loss.

Are There DIY Efforts with Which I Can Assist?
It is natural for a homeowner to want to clean up some of the water invading their home. However, consumer-grade equipment often fails to provide results anywhere near our industrial-strength tools and equipment. Furthermore, you run the risk of causing even more damage without realizing it when you try to handle floodwater with DIY methods. It is not uncommon for our crews to arrive to find out that the initial loss was made worse by self-cleaning efforts, such as:
- Contamination that spreads into other areas of the home
- Water migration outside of the flood-loss zone
- Exposure to potentially hazardous materials
- Unnecessary secondary damage to building materials and belongings
Why Do Contaminants Spread So Easily?
Any flood loss can present with varying degrees of contamination. When floodwater, also known as blackwater, enters the home, it brings a range of contaminants. These contaminants may include:
- Dirt, silt, various debris
- Fecal matter, and more
Contaminants such as these will often travel and spread quickly through foot traffic. DIY cleaning methods using high-pressure water may also aerosolize the pollutants, making them airborne and providing a path to other interior areas. When you call us at SERVPRO to help with your flood emergency, you can count on us to take several necessary precautions:
- Our crew wears personal protective equipment (PPE), which includes foot coverings
- We put plastic sheeting into place to create contamination barriers and air scrubbers for an environment with negative pressure
- Buffers need placing in areas where there is only partial flooding present
With flooding from a violent storm in Berkeley Heights, we also take the time to ensure your property is safe. We will secure your home by:
- Ensuring the safety of your home and our crew by putting braces in place if your structure is damaged
- Boarding up or taping of any damage, including broken windows
- Shutting off the electricity and other utilities near the flood-loss zone may pose a potential hazard from shock or fire
How Can My Structure Be Damaged During a Storm and Flood?
The physical integrity of your home could be at risk and supporting structures such as a garage or shed. During the force of heavy, wind, rain, and flooding, there could be issues such as:
- Metal or wood framing that can bed or begin to shear off
- Doors, windows and siding that may warp or break entirely
- Depending on the water levels and pressure, your foundation could be at risk for a wash-out
After your structure is secure, our crews get to work using high-powered extraction equipment. With truck-mounted extractors, submersible pumps, and various other tools, we pull out all of the standing water within the loss zone. It is then essential to take the time to use specialized moisture detection tools to locate any hidden pockets where water may have migrated. We then put into place a range of drying machines to facilitate the next phase, including:
- Industrial-strength fans
- Centrifugal air movers
- Desiccant dehumidifiers
All of these drying tools help reduce relative humidity and ensure your interior is dry for the final restoration phase. No matter the level of flood damage you are facing, our team is no match at SERVPRO of Western Union County. Call us 24/7 at (908) 791-9177, and we can send out a crew to get to work as soon as possible!

SERVPRO Provides Deodorization After A Fire in New Providence
A fire causes severe problems, and the foul odors that occur can make a home unlivable. Deodorization is an integral part of fire restoration cleanup in New Providence. Restoring your home is our goal, and this means getting rid of bad smells.
What steps do you take to treat odors from a fire?
Any home that has suffered fire damage in New Providence will have lingering odors. Our fire and smoke restoration technicians (FSRT) take several steps to clean your home. This includes getting to the source of nasty smells and clearing the house of noxious odors. If the odors remain, they can cause the following issues:
- Compromised air quality
- Increased health problems
- Ruin items in the home
- Make the home uninhabitable
The Sweet Smell of a Clean Home
The smells in a home after fire damage results from a mix of natural and chemical odors. Our Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) trained technicians know what to look for and how to treat it. It starts with the basics:
- Removing the source of the odor – this is the first and most crucial step. It could be charred wood, burnt building materials, or burnt carpet. Our IICRC techs provide safe disposal of any discarded materials.
- Surface Cleaning – smells can be a result of smoke and soot residue deposited on surfaces. All surfaces are cleaned and sanitized with the proper equipment and cleaner. Chemical containment, vapor odor control, and thermal foggers may be used.
- Sealing – When more steps are needed, or removal is too expensive or not feasible, sealing off the odor may be necessary. Examples of sealing would be to seal off unused ductwork or paint walls.
SERVPRO’s goal is to leave your home, “Like it never even happened.” No one wants to live with a lingering reminder of fire damage. We can clear up those odors in a safe and professional manner.

Can I Use Some DIY Methods for Cleaning After the Fire?
With charred debris, stubborn soot, and pesky soot particles, it is best to leave the cleanup to trained professionals. Do-it-yourself cleaning often hinders the process and may lead to unnecessary secondary damage. Professional intervention following a fire helps to address a variety of issues:
- Portions of a structure after a fire must be assessed to determine stability, such as ceilings, floors, and walls.
- Toxicity is a concern due to the fire and residue left after a fire loss. We come in with personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure the safety of our crew while also limiting the spread of debris throughout your home.
- Water or chemicals used to extinguish the fire may be in abundance when we arrive for mitigation. We address this immediately using extraction techniques and advanced technology, thus speeding up the restoration.
- Cleaning agents or methods used to clean soot and smoke residue varies depending on the materials burned in the fire. Our team is made up of technicians trained following the standards set forth by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC) to tackle any size or scope fire loss.
- EPA-registered cleaning products and disinfectants help ensure your interior is clean and safe for you and your family to enjoy once again.
What Restoration and Cleaning Methods are Used to Treat Fire Damage?
Our technicians know that each restoration project is unique, so we treat it as such. We craft a plan that best suits the needs of your home and the nature of the fire. During our assessment, both dry and wet cleaning methods are often put into various steps.
- Wet: This cleaning method is excellent on hard surfaces and materials not damaged easily by water. Our crew might use water mixed with specialized cleaning agents that help to strip away the soot and smoke, which leaves the surface below refreshed and clean. We also have ultrasonic machines that use an aqueous solution of water, softener, and mild detergent. Using high-frequency sound waves, the pressure creates thousands of bubbles that help to loosen stubborn grime safely.
- Dry: This cleaning method helps address materials otherwise easily damaged with wet cleaning methods. We take a look at your books, antiques, electronics, and porous items and use brushes, towels, or sponges to loosen the residue and soot until your items are clean.
When you call on SERVPRO of Western Union County to help with fire damage, you may rest assured in knowing that your home is in excellent hands. Call (908) 791-9177 to have a trained crew deployed to your location to start the assessment process. We can be reached 24/7 for emergency cleanup and restoration.

How Can the Act of Rewetting a Carpet Correct Commercial Water Damage Stains?
Each case of commercial water damage in a New Providence property is unique, but the rules of the science used in the restoration services are finite. After the extraction of excess water and drying a property, unsightly water stains may remain on the carpet and upholstery.

One of the biggest benefits of using this type of cleaner is that no residues get left behind in the fibers, and it leaves them sanitized.

Is It Necessary to Dispose of All Charred Materials After Fire Damage Incidents in New Providence?
Fire damage could leave lingering effects if not taken care of properly. Contact SERVPRO for assistance in mitigation.
Methodical Evaluation of the Damage and Use of Advanced Cleaning Techniques Can Help Salvage Some Materials
Containing a fire before it consumes your entire house should give you a reason to celebrate. Small fires sparked by unattended cooking or faulty electronic appliances are likely to leave localized damages a room or section of the property.
Significant charring is likely to affect materials such as storage cabinets, tables, walls, or ceilings. Deciding whether to tear everything down or search for fire damage restoration solutions in New Providence might be challenging, especially when you consider the work involved and the value of the affected items.
What determines whether a material can be restored?
- Depth of charring
- The type of finish
- Structural composition of a material
Since charring starts at the surface and progresses deeper as the fire rages, it can result in the deformation of the affected surfaces since heat does not spread uniformly. If it is too deep, the material might lose structural strength. Our SERVPRO technicians rely on visual observations or take measurements with a char depth gauge to determine whether charring is too deep. Such evaluation is especially necessary for materials made with thick blocks of wood.
The type of finish can influence the decision of whether to salvage an item or material. Finishes that can be reapplied conveniently after removing the charred material offer more flexibility. Some typical finishes in this list include:
Which is the best method to restore charred materials?
Before starting the restoration process, it is essential to remove hardware such as knobs and hinges from an item. Various methods can help remove the layer of charred material from a surface. Removal mostly involves standard abrasive methods such as sanding or wire brushing. However, they take time and might damage the underlying material. Our SERVPRO technicians also use advanced methods such as dry ice or soda blasting to restore charred surfaces since they do not cause additional damages.
With help from SERVPRO of Western Union County, you can salvage many items damaged by fire. Call us at (908) 791-9177 to help. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Can Carpets Get Cleaned for Reuse After a Fire?
New Providence, your fire damage needs SERVPRO’s tools and reliability.
With their advanced equipment and years of experience, SERVPRO can restore the carpet in your New Providence home after a fire loss.
There are a few key elements that need to happen after a fire loss in a New Providence home to ensure the carpet is restorable. In many cases, although a carpet covered in soot may be overwhelming to look at, it has possibilities for reuse through professional cleaning applications.
- The restoration services need to begin as soon as possible
- If water got used to extinguish the fire, it needs to have aged less than 24-hours
- The carpet should have no charring or melted areas
What Should Be Done First for a Carpet with Fire Damage?
If you have a New Providence home with fire damage that affects a room with carpet, one of the first actions you should do is to confer with your fire department to see if it safe for you to remain in the dwelling. Noxious smoke residues and soot have the potential to be an irritant and may not be healthy to stay around them. In the majority of cases, if the loss is in a single area that can get closed off, the fire department may say it is okay to remain within the property as long as the HVAC remains off and you avoid foot traffic throughout the loss area.
Cleaning and Removal of Other Items in the Rooms Damaged by Fire
The techs remove furnishings and other items on the carpet so it can get cleaned properly. As each element gets moved, the techs make a detailed report of the article, its location in the room as well as its condition. Items that need cleaning get transferred to an outside area for restorative cleaning actions. Any item too damaged for restoration gets disposed of only with the approval of the property owner or the adjuster.
Common Tactics for Carpet Restoration After Fire Loss
Before any cleanup begins on the carpet, the SERVPRO techs test the fibers to determine their likelihood of shrinkage, dye bleed, and material makeup. This assists the techs in choosing the correct cleaning solutions and methods that result in the best outcome.
- Extraction of any remaining water from fire extinguishing efforts
- Drying of the carpet using air movers
- Removal of soot from the fibers using vacuums
- Addressing of any residual staining or spots
- Deep steam cleaning to eradicate any remaining dirt, oils or odors
Equipment Crucial to Carpet Restoration After a Home Fire
SERVPRO technicians rely on different types of professional-grade equipment to assist in the restoration of the carpet. Containment using heavy gauge plastic keeps the airborne soot within the work area during mitigation. When needed, the technicians can create negative air chambers to capture and port away particulate. They also utilize air scrubbers to help improve air quality during the cleanup and restoration.
Portable pumps do the work to pull large amounts of water quickly out of the carpet and allow technicians to move on rapidly to the drying phase. In some cases, the carpet may need a particular drying application known as "floating." This method involves opening one side of the carpet and directing the flow of air movers underneath. In situations where only a portion of the carpet requires drying, the technicians can create custom tents using plastic over the wet areas only and dry them thoroughly.
Help With Filing Insurance Claims After a Fire in the Home
Although SERVPRO technicians attempt to save homeowners the cost of replacement for all types of structure and contents after a fire, it is not always possible. Any items that turned out to be a loss get a full, detailed report created that includes photos and descriptions to assist property owners in the filing of any loss claims with their insurance company. This report can aid in expediting the claims.
How Can Smoke Odors Get Removed from a Carpet?
After a fire, the pungent odor of smoke permeates anything porous; this includes carpet. The techs have the experience and advanced equipment to address any level of odor control needed to eradicate the distinctive, pungent scent that a fire can leave behind in a home. They frequently turn to applications such as thermal fogging or the safe but powerful hydroxyl generators for use on airborne particles.
Fire damage can spread throughout the home unless cleanup begins quickly. SERVPRO of Western Union County at (908) 791-9177 is available 24/7 to assist local property owners with the full restoration of their homes after a fire loss.

Turn to SERVPRO to Inspect and Assess the Damage in Your New Providence Home
A leaky dishwater can turn your kitchen into a watery mess, and the damage can extend well beyond the visible water. Consider calling a professional company to inspect the damage, use the right tools and fix the problem.
What are some of the tools used to find less obvious water damage in your New Providence Home?
o Thermal Imaging Cameras
o Moisture Meters
o Boroscopes and Inspection Cameras
How is moisture detected in building materials?
Thermal imaging cameras are used to identify the presence of water that may have leaked into flooring, drywall, etc. These cameras evaluate the extent of the moisture and show how far it has traveled. They may also indicate the presence of water that cannot be detected using other tools.
How is moisture in building materials measured?
Moisture meters provide reliable numbers for SERVPRO professionals to assess this kind of damage. These meters can also be calibrated to measure moisture penetration in a variety of different materials.
What about hidden moisture damage?
Inspection cameras and boroscopes can look behind cabinets, the dishwasher itself and other hard to inspect areas to detect the presence of moisture. They can also detect contamination, and they have the ability to record still images and take video.
Can contamination be detected and measured?
Yes, in most instances. SERVPRO professionals use luminometers to test surfaces and residual water for organic contamination. This allows them to determine if further action is necessary to eliminate this problem.

Who Can I Call for Commercial Water Cleanup After a Bathroom Sink Pipe Bursts in My Supermarket?
SERVPRO Techs Are Available in New Providence for Commercial Water Cleanup
Supermarket bathrooms tend to see high amounts of foot traffic, meaning these areas tend to get frequent inspections and maintenance. However, even with proper preventive measures in place, accidents can still happen. A sink overflow, pinhole leak, or burst pipe can leave water all over your commercial bathroom that may be more than your custodial staff is equipped to handle.
If your New Providence retail facilities require commercial water cleanup, Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC)-certified technicians from SERVPRO are just a phone call away from assisting you. SERVPRO's training ensures that technicians adhere to both restoration industry standards and local regulations for commercial facilities during cleanup.
"Don'ts" of Commercial Water Damage
- Do not enter an area with standing water and running electricity. While a tiled bathroom with water-resistant paint can pose less risk, water can seep through grout and nooks and crannies to affect the electrical system.
- Do not soak up standing water with newspaper or similar material. Not only does newspaper not address water accumulation in and behind structural material, but the ink on the paper can transfer to surfaces and become difficult to remove, especially from porous surfaces like tile grout.
- Avoid adjusting temperatures. The success of a drying project is highly dependent on the temperature and humidity of the affected area. Warming up a wet room can instead evaporate water and cause secondary damages. Adjust temperatures in the area only after consulting with a restoration technician.
SERVPRO Technicians Can Restore Your Commercial Restroom Area
SERVPRO's water damage approach starts with a thorough inspection with cutting-edge technologies. Penetrating and non-penetrating sensors and meters allow for technicians to plan and execute a cleanup and drying strategy tailored to your space's needs. These pros can also measure relative humidity, temperature, and even moisture behind surfaces for the precise calculation of air mover and dehumidifier ratios and placement.

Ozone Deodorization for Fire Damage in New Providence Homes
SERVPRO of Western Union County is quick to get your fire damage and Odor under control.
Removing Odors Effectively After Fire Damages Your Home
Numerous tools get used in the deodorization needs of a New Providence home after fire losses. Addressing this widespread concern is rarely left to one device alone, but rather a blend of the top machines that our SERVPRO team uses to meet the neutralization needs in various areas of your property. Thermal foggers, for example, might be better used for confined areas and soft materials, whereas ozone generators have different applications in a fire-damaged residence.
Identifying the best equipment to use for varying levels of fire damage in your New Providence home begins with the inspection process. It is often not challenging to determine the spread and migration of odor concerns, but choosing the right tool and product to address these obstacles is not as straightforward as it might seem. In many situations discarding debris and damaged structural systems can reduce the severity of smoke and fire odors before we implement tools like the ozone machines.
How It Works
You cannot appreciate how ozone generators can help your home without realizing how they work. Ozone is created by breaking down oxygen into two molecules. When these new rogue molecules bond with oxygen in the environment, they create a new compound with three oxygen molecules attracted to odor compounds. Harsh odors bond with this irregular compound and get neutralized. The creation and presence of ozone are harmful to living creatures, so its use must get carefully monitored.
How It Gets Used
Our SERVPRO professionals have standalone equipment for use in a house to utilize this environmental cleaning process for clearing out odors in the residence. In addition, we have a chamber at our warehouse to deodorize entire lots of contents taken from fire-damaged homes to restore them.
While we might have numerous deodorization tools, ozone machines are a common choice for their practical action and absolute odor neutralization. However we can help your house feel like home again after a fire loss, give our SERVPRO of Western Union County team a call at (908) 791-9177.

Remediating Commercial Mold Damage in a New Providence Hotel Lobby
Business owners are well aware that mold exists in some form in all buildings, and that the key to curbing mold growth is regular inspection and thorough sanitation. While mold cannot be eliminated from any building, it can easily be kept at safe levels by keeping moisture levels low and not providing these microbes with organic material to eat.
If your New Providence business needs rapid commercial mold damage remediation from licensed professionals, SERVPRO technicians are only a phone call away from returning your facilities to a preloss condition. Because mold can cause health effects, it is essential to quickly sanitize areas and implement proper containment measures to prevent the spreading of spores. Restoration techs take the safety of both you and your clients seriously and focus on administering cleanup that is done to code.
Preventative Measures for Mold Proliferation
• Know the signs. Mold can grow in unexpected places and comes in a variety of colors and textures. Keep an eye out for damp surfaces or particularly humid areas, speckled or fuzzy-looking stains, and musty, wet smells, especially from porous surfaces.
• Implement repairs ASAP. Whether you have a roof leak, loose window seals, or cracks in your building's foundation, all it takes is one pipe leak in a vulnerable location to allow gallons of water per day into a hotel.
• Keep HVAC spotless. Mold spores can spread very quickly through ventilation systems and affect multiple areas, including guest rooms and communal areas.
• Call in the pros when you need them. A mold remediation expert can help you not just by removing mold, but also by helping you prevent future issues with mold in your building.
SERVPRO Restores Your Building's Safety
After establishing thorough containment measures, including covering vents and establishing clean rooms, SERVPRO technicians can remove mold-affected items quickly and wipe down affected surfaces with EPA-registered biocides or dry cleaning and agitation. Techs may also use purification tools like HEPA-filter air scrubbers to improve indoor air quality and catch small spores during cleanup.

However it occurs, if it spreads to the roof, the cleanup and restoration involved can seem overwhelming even to consider.
If your New Providence residence requires a fire emergency-response team that can restore your home after disaster strikes, SERVPRO technicians are ready to help. These pros use the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) standards to bring homeowners a consistent and high-quality clean every time. SERVPRO is available 24/7 to handle fire-related disasters in over 1,700 franchise locations in the United States and Canada.
Protecting Your Roofing from Fire
• Clean your roof. Even if you use fire-resistant, Class A materials, they can still ignite and burn after long-term exposure to high temperatures. To prevent this, remove debris regularly or have a trusted professional take care of it.
• Clean your chimney regularly. Creosote deposits and flammable materials can spark a flame in no time under the right conditions. A clean chimney does not have flammable deposits, which means there is little organic material to fuel a fire that could spread through the chimney and onto your roof.
• Keep flammable debris away from your home. Trim trees, keep the area around your home clean and minimize attached structures that could allow a fire to spread.
• Monitor your electrical system. In many homes, wiring and electrical systems can be near or on the roof, including HVAC, lighting, and conduit pipes. Keep your electrical system in good shape and minimize debris around it to prevent an electrical fire.
SERVPRO Preserves Your Home
When occupants have vacated after a fire, SERVPRO uses a strict set of safety procedures to ensure safety during the restoration process. Openings caused by the fire are boarded up, and technicians examine the area for loose roof trusses and floor joints. If sprinklers or fire fighting efforts have saturated the area, water damage mitigation procedures are performed first.
Technicians take care to preserve pipes to prevent freezing and bursting with antifreeze in situations where access to water is restricted. SERVPRO can also implement power sources if there is no access to electricity. Technicians may deodorize the area with thermal foggers and HEPA filter air scrubbers before cleaning and taking inventory of damaged goods if substantial damage has taken place.
SERVPRO of Western Union County is always prepared to be Faster to Any Size Disaster. When you need disaster cleanup services from experienced pros, you can call (908) 791-9177.

Responding to Mold Growth in Your New Providence Nursing Home
Let us help you get your New Providence Nursing Home back in order after mold strikes.
We Understand the Importance of Removing Mold and Improving Air Quality in Your New Providence Property
There is no mistaking the knowledge that mold colonization and exposure to the residents of your New Providence nursing home can lead to health effects. Considering the health ailments that already affect many of the guests in the facility, direct exposure to active colonization could lead to considerably hazardous conditions. The discovery of microbial threats should get handled immediately by competent professionals like our SERVPRO team.
One of the initial obstacles that exist when contending with mold damage in your New Providence nursing facility is how to navigate remediation with the care and attention that the patients and residents need. Assisted living requirements do not slow or stall out because of a developing hazardous situation in the building. Instead, our professionals can establish defined boundaries to seal off the property from the colonization and prevent the spread of spores or volatile organic compounds.
Containment barriers exist for two specific reasons: to limit the exposure of bystanders and employees to mold colonization and to increase the productivity of remediation tactics within this established zone. Thick 6mil plastic sheeting and wood framework can get constructed throughout the broad tiled hallways and seal against the walls and the ceiling drywall. This seal all around the damaged areas can help efforts like drying, air scrubbing, and controlled demolition to be less compromising to the rest of the facility.
Within this containment area, we can work on applying antimicrobial agents to areas like the linoleum flooring. However, materials such as the gypsum drywall, wood trim, and thinner ceiling drywall might require removal over abrasive cleaning or sanding techniques that might remove colonies from more durable and less sensitive materials.
You have set standards and thresholds that your medical facility must remain within to adhere to regulations regarding any potential health hazard. While our professionals can help with the removal of present colonization, it is recommended in assisted living facilities to utilize a third party hygienist to test and sample the environment after remediation to assure property management and board oversight that the problem has gotten resolved.
With so many assisted living patients to consider when mold growth gets discovered, it is critical to act immediately to stop the spread of these colonies, remove the present threat, and resolve the underlying moisture concerns that allowed microbial growth in the first place. Our SERVPRO of Western Union County team can help in all of these areas when you call (908) 791-9177.

Flood Damage In Your Berkeley Heights Home
Our SERVPRO of Western Union County team can help to balance these traits for fast and thorough drying of your property.
Drying Sciences at Work in Berkeley Heights Homes After a Flood
Drying your Berkeley Heights home after a flood or water loss incident involves a complex blend of specific conditions to get met. Our grasp of the science of moisture removal and efficient drying practices are what allow our SERVPRO professionals to be leading technicians in the industry. Understanding the balance of all factors that impact the pace of drying efforts can help to not only improve the turnover time for our customers but reduces higher costs for you or your insurance.
Flood damage in Berkeley Heights homes can be a complicated situation, especially when the damage at hand has penetrated beyond the surface of materials. Standing water and moisture in structural cavities can be a considerable challenge to address. Drying a property after widespread flooding, or even localized damages, involves the same balance of three critical drying elements:
The warmth of the environment and the surface temperature of material getting dried can both play a factor in the efficiency of moisture removal. During the often-harsh winters, the lower temperatures outside and inside the house can both play a factor in how quickly areas get dried. We have portable electric heaters that can help to bolster the warmth in the drying zone to continue maximum drying production.
Regulating the flow of air through the structure is an important consideration when working to improve the efficiency of the drying process. Our SERVPRO professionals can utilize many air movers working simultaneously to provide a powerful evaporative process.
As many of our drying processes involve evaporation, humidity rises following the displacement of moisture from structural elements and contents. Addressing this concern often involves the proper placement and frequency of dehumidification units. In lower temperatures, the ideal choice would be our desiccant units.
The science of drying your home after a flood involves a complex balance between these three listed elements, knowing that they are intertwined. Increases in airflow increase humidity, for example. Our SERVPRO of Western Union County team can help to balance these traits for fast and thorough drying of your property. Give us a call anytime at (908) 791-9177.

Proper Planning Helps Expedite Water Removal from a Berkeley Heights Home
Water removal from your Berkeley Heights home needs to be quick, let's make a plan.
Let SERVPRO help you make the proper plans for your Berkeley Heights water damage.
When you realize the water spill in your home is too adverse to handle on your own, the next line of thought is whether you can find a professional that can complete the removal fast enough to minimize inconveniences and costs. We managed to remove water from a Berkeley Heights home in record time because of proper planning.
What Rooms or Property Section is affected?
Before taking steps for the actual water removal from the Berkeley Heights home, Our SERVPRO technicians scoped the site to establish how widespread the problem was. The leak started in a laundry on the first floor and spread to the lower floor. Such water loss situations are harder to tackle because the water undoubtedly finds a way into wall and ceiling cavities. Luckily, there was no standing water on the floors since the homeowner had turned off the mains. We used a thermal camera to check for wet spots in the ceiling and wall cavities so that we could know which areas to focus on.
What is wet and how wet is it
The amount of water or wetness left in materials determines the effort needed to dry the property. Our SERVPRO technicians know that absorbency rates vary in different materials, which affects the amount of water the materials hold. As expected, the carpeted floor held most of the spilled water. We also used moisture meters to check other contents such as upholstery and wooden furniture and fittings.
What processes are necessary?
Once armed with the information on how widespread the water loss is, there is a need to take appropriate steps to counter it. Various processes, including demolition, containment, and drying may be necessary. At home, we had to perform some demolition when opening up the staircase, some cabinets, and other assemblies. We had to replace the pad and dry the carpet, so removal was necessary. Setting up air movers and dehumidifiers helped finalize the drying process.
Planning is crucial when handling water loss situations. Call SERVPRO of Western Union County at (908) 791-9177 to help. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Grilling Safety Tips
With barbecue season upon us, we find more and more that tragedy can strike due to grills. Although it seems like something we use daily, without the proper precautions, it can be extremely dangerous. However, we have a few tips and safety precautions you can follow when deciding to grill.
- Only use grills outdoors. The use of propane and charcoal barbecue grills indoors can cause a fire in the blink of an eye.
- Place the grill away from your home as well as other things that may catch fire. If something goes wrong, your grill can ignite in flames and cause everything around it to as well.
- Always clean your grill. Sometimes, when the grill has a buildup of excess grease or fat from a previous barbecue, that can cause flames to jump up higher than normal. This can prove dangerous for you and the people around.
- Finally, never leave the grill unattended. Make sure that someone is always around the grill in the event that something does go wrong.
Even if you follow these precautions, tragedy still can strike. If you find yourself in that situation, call SERVPRO of Western Union County. We're here to help.

Western Union County Smoke and Soot Cleanup
Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action!
Smoke and soot facts:
- Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
- Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
- The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.
Different Types of Smoke
There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Fort Lee will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
Our Fire Damage Restoration Services
Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions. We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage. We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Fire Extinguisher Protocol
According to OSHA, the most common emergency small businesses must plan for is a fire. In fact, OSHA requires employers to thoroughly train workers not only on how to use an extinguisher properly, but also how to accurately asses a situation and determine when evacuation is the safest course of action. You never know when a fire is going to occur, so it helps to be prepared.
When using a fire extinguisher, the acronym almost everyone is popular with is PASS. PASS stands for
- Pull the pin on the extinguisher
- Aim the nozzle toward the base of the fire
- Squeeze the handle
- Sweep the nozzle from side to side at the base of the fire
By following this method and keeping the acronym in the back of your mind, you no longer have to worry about fires in the break room. If the situation does arise and you need help with the aftermath, call SERVPRO of Western Union County at (201) 496-6024.

What To Do When a Pipe Bursts
A pipe burst can happen at any time. When it does, people are often left unsure of what to do. Here at SERVPRO of Western Union County, we are equipped to deal with that type of situation in the best way possible. While you wait for us to get to the scene, there are a couple of things you can do:
- Turn of the water to your house. If the water remains on, odds are the water will continue to leak or even flood. By shutting off the source, you are reducing the amount of damage done to your house.
- If the pipe continues to leak or drip, use a bucket to collect the water to contain the problem.
- If the pipe breaks in a wall or ceiling, switch off the power at the main breaker and avoid electrical fixtures or wiring. The mix of wires and water can be extremely dangerous.
We are trained to help and deal with these kinds of situations. If you ever find yourself in that place, give us a call at (201) 496-6024.
Categorizing a Water Damage
When our crew gets to a water damage, they identify the extent of the damage by categorizing the risk and immediate threat the water poses.
Water is categorized to describe how dirty and unsanitary the water is.
- Category 1 - The source of the water is sanitary and it does not pose a risk. However, if left untreated, it could change categories and become unsanitary.
- Category 2 - The water is significantly contaminated and it can cause a human to become sick if they come in contact with it.
- Category 3 - The water is the most unsanitary and contaminated and contains harmful pathogenic or toxigenic agents.
Water is categorized not only for the safety of the homeowner but for our crew as well. By categorizing the water, it also allows us to use the proper chemicals and equipment to deal with the task at hand. If you find yourself in this situation, give SERVPRO of Western Union County a call at (201) 496-6024.

Mold Growth in Your Commercial Building
Mold is not something anyone wants to deal with. In fact, it's something they should never have to deal with. However, sometimes mold strikes and when it does, it's no fun. There are some ways to reduce mold growth and lower the risk of it growing in your commercial building!
What Causes Mold?
The key to mold growth is moisture. Mold can result from something as simple as an increase in humidity. Although that is not something we can control, there are other times when mold can grow but we can prevent it. Mold can be a result of:
- Leaking Pipes
- Leaks in the Roof
All of these have to do with moisture. To avoid mold growth, check regularly for leaks or flooding. Mold only needs between 24-48 hours to grow. By checking regularly, you are slimming the chances of allowing the mold to grow. To prevent condensation, if you keep the temperature of the building slightly warmer, condensation will not form.
Mold is no fun. In the event that you encounter it in your commercial building, give SERVPRO of Western Union County a call and we'll help you right away.
Although everyone is excited and eager for summer, I'm sure everyone is not so eager to have to deal with thunderstorms. Each summer, we experience thunderstorms that seem to appear in the blink of an eye. Often times, these storms are accompanied by high winds that can cause some damage. With that being said, we have a few safety precautions that you can take if you know a storm is on the way.
First off, make sure you are not in a body of water. Although this is usually the first one that comes to peoples' minds, it is one of the most important. It can be deadly if you are in a pool or lake when a storm arrives.
In addition, make sure furniture and other things such as umbrellas or pool floats are away in secure as to not be blown away.
Lastly, make sure you have extra food and water in case of a power outage.
If you follow these general safety tips, I'm sure no storm will be a match for you!
Preparing for a Hurricane
With hurricane season quickly approaching, the importance of being prepared increases. Follow these guidelines from the CDC to make sure you and your family stay safe in the event of a hurricane.
- Make a plan. It is important that even if there is no immediate risk of a hurricane or storm that your family has a plan in place in the event one occurs.
- Prepare an emergency food supply. The CDC recommends that you have at least a 3-5 day supply of food on hand. They also recommend foods that have a long storage life, require little to no cooking, refrigeration, or water, and that meet the needs of babies and pets.
- Prepare an emergency water supply. During an event like a hurricane, water supplies can become contaminated. Therefore, it is crucial that you have at least 1 gallon of water per day for each person and each pet.
- Get safety products. Things such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers, blankets, and batteries are crucial to have in case the power goes out or a fire occurs.
Although you can never fully prepare for a natural disaster, if you follow these guidelines, you will be as most prepared possible. In the event you do encounter a hurricane or tropical storm, SERVPRO of Western Union County is here to help. Give us a call at (201) 496-6024.

On June 3rd, 2018 SERVPRO of Western Union County attended the 2018 Fort Lee Arts & Music Festival! We are always looking for opportunities to get involved in our community as well as expand our business. Several members of our team attended and each one of them had a blast. We can't wait to see what the next festival has in store!
Classifying a Water Damage
When our crew gets to a water damage, we not only categorize it, but we classify the damage as well.
Water damages are classified based on the amount of water as well as the material involved in the damage.
- Class 1 - This is the least amount of water, absorption, and evaporation. Only a portion of a room is affected or a larger area with minimal moisture absorbed. There is little to no wet carpet present.
- Class 2 - This involves a large amount of water, absorption, and evaporation. At least an entire room with carpet is affected. There is moisture in structural materials and substructure soil.
- Class 3 - This involves the greatest amount of water, absorption, and evaporation. In this class, the water may have come from overhead. Ceilings, walls, insulation, carpets, etc. are saturated.
- Class 4 - This class relates to special drying situations. For example, some materials may require longer drying times and even different methods.
Classifying water damages is vital to our evaluation. It lets us know what type of equipment we need to use, the extent of the damage, and how long we can expect it to take. If you find yourself in this situation, give SERVPRO of Western Union County a call at (201) 496-6024.
Fire Safety in Commercial Buildings
Although we like to think tragedy will never strike, unfortunately, it does. Whether it be in your home, on the road, or at work, it can come when you are least expecting it. However, some things can be prevented and lives can be saved if you have a plan of action in emergency situations!
Plan of Action in a Commercial Building
Commercial buildings can often be the most deadly forms of tragedy. If in the event of a fire at home, people know where they can and can't go and how to get there. However, at work, that might not be the case. It is extremely important that employees know where to exit in case of a fire while at work. We recommend a few things to help.
- It is best if there are exit signs posted around the building as well as pictures depicting the route to the nearest exit. If people are aware of the exits as well as the routes they can take to get there, they will be able to act more efficiently in an emergency situation.
- We also recommend commercial buildings have fire drills at least once a month. By conducting fire drills, employees of a commercial building can familiarize themselves with the nearest exit and the quickest route to get out safely.
By implementing these tips, commercial buildings can help reduce the severity of a tragedy and prepare people in the event that it occurs.

Stay Warm This Winter!
As the temperatures begin to drop and winter closes in, it can sometimes be difficult to keep warm with the wrath of winter against you. However, we have a few tips to help keep you warm all winter long!
The use of area rugs can be extremely helpful in the winter. This simple addition helps to insulate rooms with hardwood or tile floors and regulates the temperature inside your home.
In addition to using an area rug, a helpful tip is to close the fireplace damper when the fireplace is not in use. By closing the fireplace damper, you are preventing the warm air from escaping from your home.
By utilizing these couple tips, you can make sure you and your family stay warm all winter!
Common Breeding Grounds for Mold
Mold tends to grow in warm, dark, moist environments. It feeds off moisture and only needs about 24-48 hours to begin to grow. It is important that you regularly check these locations in your home to avoid mold growth.
- Bathrooms - Mold tends to grow in bathrooms due to the increased temperature as well increase in moisture. Regularly check around your tub, shower, and sink.
- Kitchen - Kitchens are also a popular place for mold to grow because of the increased temperature and moisture. Check by the sink as wells as behind the refrigerator and dishwasher.
- Basement - Basements are common for mold due to the increased temperature and darkness. Check regularly.
- Laundry Room - Like the bathroom, kitchen, and basement, laundry rooms are susceptible to mold because of the humidity and moisture from laundry machines.
Although these are common places for mold to grow, it is still possible for it to grow elsewhere. We recommend checking the entire house regularly. If you do encounter mold, give SERVPRO of Western Union County a call at (908) 791-9177.
Signs of Mold in Your Home
Often times, mold goes undetected in homes. However, there are a few signs that might point to mold as an issue in your home.

- Signs of Water Problems - Water stains or discoloration on walls, floors, or ceilings in your home could show that you have a moisture problem. If you have a moisture problem, it increases the chances of you having a mold problem.

Conditions in Western Union County Might Be Right For Mold
It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mold exist, yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mold is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments. While mold and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, there are certain species of mold that can cause health effects for some people.
If the right conditions exist, mold will grow. Those conditions include:
- Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
- Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.
- Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.
Mold growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mold activity. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house a prime target for mold growth.
If you suspect mold in your home, call SERVPRO of Western Union County to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively remediate mold in your home or business.

How to Prevent Mold Growth
Mold is more than a pest; it can be dangerous. Mold in a home can cause health effects. In order to prevent these health effects and mold in general, we have a few tips to prevent the growth of mold in your home.
- Dry wet areas immediately. Mold needs moisture to grow. By drying wet areas immediately, it eliminates the surface for mold to grow.
- Make sure your home is properly ventilated. When a home isn't properly ventilated, appliances that produce moisture can also be the cause of mold.
- Keep mold off of household plants. Due to the moisture in the soil, plants are a perfect place for mold to grow and then eventually, spread. Avoid this by monitoring your plants and making sure they stay mold free.
In the event you do encounter mold, give SERVPRO of Western Union County a call at (908) 791-9177 so we can help.
Does Your Western Union County Home Have A Mold Problem?
Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
- Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
- Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.
